Bizan N. Balzer is a Senior Scientist heading the AFM Group at the Institute of Physical Chemistry (Prof. Dr. Thorsten Hugel) at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany. Her received his Diploma in Physics and Biophysics in 2008 and his Ph.D. in 2013 at the Central Institute for Medical Engineering (IMETUM), the Cluster of Excellence Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) and Physik Department of the Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany.
During Dr. Balzer’s training he focused on studying adhesion and tribological mechanisms between single polymers and solid substrates or thin polymer films in solution using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) based imaging and force spectroscopy as well as functionalization of solid surfaces and AFM probes.
In 2014/2015, he worked as a technical expert at Ter Meer Steinmeister & Partner Patent Attorneys mbB and Kilian, Kilian & Partner Patent Attorneys mbB. In 2016, he rejoined Prof. Dr. Hugel’s lab at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany, as a post-doctoral fellow and later on Group Leader. He continued his research on single molecules investigating complex polymeric systems with AFM based techniques.
Since 2019 Dr. Balzer is a Responsible Investigator of the Cluster of Excellence livMatS, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, investigating the tribolelectric properties of polymeric materials.
