Het zenuwstelsel van de mariene weekdier Aplysia californica is relatief eenvoudig, bestaande uit ongeveer 20.000 neuronen. De neuronen zijn groot (tot 1 mm in diameter) en identificeerbaar, met verschillende maten, vormen, posities en pigmentaties, en de cellichamen worden extern blootgesteld in vijf gepaarde ganglia verspreid door het hele lichaam van het dier. Deze eigenschappen hebben toegestaan ​​onderzoekers om de circuits onderliggende specifieke gedragingen in het dier een af te bakenen. De monosynaptic verbinding tussen sensorische en motorische neuronen is een centraal onderdeel van de kieuw-terugtrekking reflex in het dier, een eenvoudige defensieve reflex, waarin het dier zijn kieuw terugtrekt in reactie op tactiele stimulatie van de sifon. Een bijkomend voordeel van de Aplysia cultuur systeem komt uit het feit dat de neuronen synaps-specificiteit te tonen in de cultuur 4,5. Dus, doe sensorische neuronen vormen geen synapsen met zichzelf (autapses) of met andere sensorische neuronen, noch hebben ze synapsen vormen met non-target-geïdentificeerde motorische neuronen in cultuur. De varicosities, sites van synaptische contact tussen de zintuiglijke en motorische neuronen, zijn groot genoeg (2-7 micron in diameter), zodat synapsvorming (evenals veranderingen in de synaptische morfologie), met een doelgroep van motorische neuronen te bestuderen in het licht microscopisch niveau.
