L&#39;odorat est essentiel pour les insectes de trouver des aliments, les seconds, les prédateurs, et les sites de ponte 3. Insecte neurones sensoriels olfactifs (ARS) sont enfermés dans des poils sensoriels appelés sensilles, qui couvrent la surface des organes olfactifs. La surface de chaque sensillum est couverte de minuscules pores, à travers lequel passent odorants et de se dissoudre dans un liquide appelé lymphe sensillum, qui baigne les dendrites sensoriels de l&#39;ARS logé dans un sensillum donné. Les dendrites OSN expresse odorant récepteur (ou) des protéines, qui en fonction des insectes comme les canaux ioniques odeur-dépendants 4, 5. L&#39;interaction de molécules odorantes, les RC augmente ou diminue la cadence de tir basale de l&#39;OSN. Cette activité neuronale dans la forme des potentiels d&#39;action incarne la première représentation de la qualité, l&#39;intensité et les caractéristiques temporelles de l&#39;odorant 6, 7. Étant donné l&#39;accès facile à ces poils sensoriels, il est possible d&#39;effectuer des enregistrements extracellulaires de ARS simple en introduisant une électrode d&#39;enregistrement dans la lymphe sensillum, tandis que l&#39;électrode de référence est placé dans la lymphe de l&#39;œil ou le corps de l&#39;insecte. Chez la drosophile, sensilles maison entre un et quatre ARS, mais chaque OSN affiche généralement une amplitude caractéristique de pointe. Techniques de tri de Spike permettent d&#39;assigner des réponses dopage à l&#39;ARS individuels.
