Funktionelle Kernspintomographie (fMRI) ist derzeit der Standard-Methode zur Bewertung Hirnfunktion im Bereich der Cognitive Neuroscience, zum Teil weil fMRI Datenerfassungs-und Analyse-Techniken leicht verfügbar sind. Da fMRI hat hervorragende räumliche Auflösung, aber schlechte zeitliche Auflösung, kann diese Methode nur verwendet werden, um die räumliche Lage der Hirnaktivität mit einer bestimmten kognitiven Prozess (und zeigt so gut wie nichts über den zeitlichen Verlauf der Aktivität des Gehirns) assoziiert zu identifizieren. Im Gegensatz dazu ereignisbezogene Potential (ERP)-Aufnahme, eine Methode, die viel weniger häufig als fMRI verwendet wird, verfügt über exzellente zeitliche Auflösung und somit eine schnelle zeitliche Modulationen in neuronale Aktivität zu verfolgen. Leider sind ERPs unter in Cognitive Neuroscience verwendet werden, da die Datenerfassung Techniken nicht leicht verfügbar sind und eine geringe Dichte ERP Aufnahme hat eine schlechte räumliche Auflösung. In dem Bemühen, den verstärkten Einsatz von ERP in Cognitive Neuroscience, der vorliegende Artikel Details wichtigsten Techniken in hoher Dichte ERP Datenerfassung beteiligt zu fördern. Entscheidend ist, bieten eine hohe Dichte EKPs das Versprechen von hervorragender zeitlicher Auflösung und eine gute räumliche Auflösung (oder sehr gute räumliche Auflösung, wenn sie mit fMRI gekoppelt), die erforderlich sind, um die räumlich-zeitliche Dynamik der Funktion des menschlichen Gehirns zu erfassen.
