Autoimmuna hypophysitis kan reproduceras experimentellt genom injektion av hypofysen proteiner blandat med en adjuvans i mottagliga möss 1. Musmodeller ge oss möjlighet att studera hur sjukdomar utvecklas, ofta ger en bra replik av samma processer som sker hos människor. För vissa autoimmuna sjukdomar, som typ 1A-diabetes, det finns modeller (NOD musen) som spontant utvecklar en sjukdom som liknar den mänskliga motsvarighet. För många andra autoimmuna sjukdomar måste dock den modell som ska framkallas experimentellt. En gemensam strategi i detta avseende är att injicera musen med en dominerande antigen från orgeln som studeras. Till exempel, utredare intresserad av autoimmun tyreoidit injicerar möss med tyreoglobulin 2, och de som är intresserade av myastenia gravis injicera dem med acetylkolin-receptorn 3. Om autoantigen för en viss autoimmun sjukdom är inte känd, utredare injicera en råprotein utdrag ur orgeln är målet för den autoimmuna reaktionen. För autoimmuna hypophysitis, patogena autoantigen (s) återstår att identifiera 4, och därmed en rå hypofysen protein preparatet används.
