Células ganglionares da retina (RGCs) são neurônios do SNC que a informação de saída visual da retina para o cérebro, através do nervo óptico. O nervo óptico pode ser acessado dentro da órbita do olho e completamente seccionado (axotomized), cortando os axônios de toda a população RGC. Transecção do nervo óptico é um modelo reprodutível de morte celular por apoptose neuronal no SNC adulto 1-4. Este modelo é particularmente atraente porque a câmara vítrea do olho funciona como uma cápsula para entrega de drogas para a retina, permitindo manipulações experimentais através de injeções intra-ocular. A difusão de substâncias químicas através do fluido vítreo garante que eles agem sobre toda a população RGC. Vetores virais, plasmídeos ou curto RNAs de interferência (siRNAs) também pode ser entregue à câmara vítrea, a fim de infectar ou transfecção as células da retina 12/05.
