Biofilms zijn gemeenschappen van microben aan oppervlakken, die kan worden gevonden in de medische, industriële en natuurlijke omgeving. In feite is het leven in een biofilm is waarschijnlijk de overhand modus van de groei van microben in de meeste omgevingen. Ouder biofilms hebben een paar duidelijke kenmerken.
