Caenorhabdits elegans is uitgebreid gebruikt in de studie van stressbestendigheid, dat wordt vergemakkelijkt door de transparantie van de volwassene en embryo fasen alsook door de beschikbaarheid van genetische mutanten en transgene stammen die talloze fusie-eiwitten 1-4. Daarnaast kunnen dynamische processen zoals celdeling worden weergegeven met fluorescent gemerkte reporter eiwitten. De studie van mitose kan worden vergemakkelijkt door het gebruik van time-lapse experimenten in diverse systemen waaronder intacte organismen, vandaar de vroege C. elegans embryo is geschikt voor deze studie. Hier gepresenteerde een techniek waarbij in vivo beeldvorming van sub-cellulaire structuren in reactie op anoxische (99,999% N2, &lt;2 ppm O 2) spanning kan op eenvoudige gasstroom door instellen op een krachtige microscoop. Een microincubation kamer wordt gebruikt in combinatie met stikstofgasstroom en door een draaiende schijf confocale microscoopeen gecontroleerde omgeving waarin dieren kunnen worden afgebeeld in vivo maken. Met GFP-gelabelde gamma tubuline en histon kan de dynamiek en arrestatie van celdeling worden gecontroleerd voor, tijdens en na blootstelling aan een zuurstofarme omgeving. De resultaten van deze techniek zijn hoge resolutie, gedetailleerde video&#39;s en foto&#39;s van cellulaire structuren binnen blastomeren van embryo&#39;s worden blootgesteld aan zuurstoftekort.

C. elegans embryo&#39;s worden blootgesteld aan ernstige zuurstoftekort (anoxie) in staat zijn om te overleven met de arrestatie van biologische processen zoals ontwikkeling en celdeling 7.
