We combined frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy measures of cerebral hemoglobin oxygenation with diffuse correlation spectroscopy measures of cerebral blood flow index to estimate an index of oxygen metabolism. We tested the utility of this measure as a bedside screening tool to evaluate the health and development of the newborn brain.

A technique for performing quantitative three-dimensional (3D) imaging for a range of fluid flows is presented. Using concepts from the area of Light Field Imaging, we reconstruct 3D volumes from arrays of images. Our 3D results span a broad range including velocity fields and multi-phase bubble size distributions.

Hier zijn enkele hoogtepunten uit de maart 2013 editie van het Journal van Gevisualiseerd Experiments (Jove). Deze maand, Jove is voorzien van diverse video artikelen in de Klinische en Translational Medicine sectie. In de oogheelkunde afdeling, Connors et al.. van Massachusetts Oog &amp; Oor en Harvard Medical School hebben een audio-gebaseerde virtuele omgeving simulator om te helpen blinden het verbeteren van hun navigatie-vaardigheden. De simulator stelt gebruikers in staat om cognitieve kaarten van drie-dimensionale ruimten te bouwen in het kader van een video game-met alleen audio signalen. De gebruikers waren niet op de hoogte dat de virtuele gebouw in het spel een werkelijke gebouw vertegenwoordigt, bovendien, de gebruikers werd nooit gevraagd om het gebouw lay-out te roepen tijdens het spelen. Toch lijkt het erop dat het spel kan hen helpen navigeren door onbekende ruimtes. Het Massachusetts General Hospital en Harvard Medical School, Lin et al.. zijn het ontwikkelen van een verbeterde meThZV om niet-invasief te meten hersenstofwisseling en de bloedstroom bij pasgeborenen. Het alginaat gebaseerde biopolymeer wordt geïnjecteerd in de ruimte tussen de basis en de top van de linkerventrikel vrije wand. Dit vermindert linkerventrikel grootte en dikker zijn vrije wand, maar vermindert ook de linker ventriculaire wand stress, zoals beoordeeld door mathematische modellen. Deze therapie, genaamd Algisyl-LVR, is momenteel in klinische ontwikkelingom patiënten met gedilateerde cardiomyopathie. In Jove Immunologie en Infectie, Robinson et al.. van de Universiteit van Texas Health Science Center-Houston aantonen dat er een niet-invasieve techniek voor beeldvorming lymfevaten, die betrokken zijn in een groot aantal fysiologische en ziekteprocessen.
