Xenopus laevis sono stati utilizzati come organismo modello per studiare la formazione dell&#39;occhio. Gli occhi si sviluppano rapidamente, crescita verso la maturità in meno di una settimana per i geni di prova o percorsi che hanno un effetto sullo sviluppo visivo e la funzione. Per testare funzione visiva, la risposta optocinetico e optomotor è stato usato in zebrafish e girini Xenopus rispettivamente 1,2. Perché gli occhi dei girini di Xenopus sono relativamente più piccolo di zebrafish, questo test richiede l&#39;uso di attrezzature specializzate e personale addestrato per rilevare la coda-flip e movimenti oculari comportamento sottile in Xenopus.
