Vidare är bedömningen av gånghastighet och uthållighet utnyttjas kliniskt som diagnostiska test för svaghet, sarkopeni, och konsekvenserna av andra sjukdomar såsom kronisk obstruktiv lungsjukdom, i mänskliga ämnen 7. De biokemiska vägar som ligger bakom de positiva effekterna av uthållighetsträning på kroppssammansättning och insulinkänsligheten börjar belysas med hjälp av genetiskt eller farmakologiskt modifierade möss som visar förbättrade eller minskade fysisk kapacitet 8-11.
