Superior cuidado e habilidade são necessários para isolar a artéria carótida e inserir o cateter, o qual pode, geralmente, ser adquirido através da prática. Cirurgia por um técnico experiente não deve exceder uma hora. Após a cirurgia bem sucedida, o rato deve aparecer normal e saudável (embora o rato pode reagir com a infusão da droga real), e fármaco (s) podem ser administrados em uma dosagem uniforme e contínua controlada. As amostras de sangue devem ser tomadas a partir de um site que não seja da artéria carótida; sangramentos retro-orbital provou fácil de coletar e satisfatória para análise das concentrações de drogas. Cateteres de tamanho e forma ideal são um trunfo inestimável para a execução de uma infusão de sucesso 11. Encontramos o cateteres disponíveis commercially muitas vezes a ser muito grande e / ou muito flexível para permitir um acesso conveniente para a artéria carótida do rato. Ao propor a utilização de um fármaco, a combinação de fármacos, ou a entrega de drogas para um novo sistema, deve-se avaliar a farmacocinética do fármaco no modelo de estudo. Como o uso de modelos do rato são muitas vezes um passo vital para a descoberta de drogas pré-clínica e no desenvolvimento de drogas 1-8, é necessária a concepção de um sistema para introduzir medicamentos em ratos de uma maneira reprodutível uniforme,.
