Selektiv separation av hydrofila oxoanions (t.ex. sulfat, kromat, fosfat) från konkurrerande vattenlösningar utgör ett grundläggande utmaning med relevans för miljöåterställning, energiproduktion, och människors hälsa. 1,2 sulfat i synnerhet är svårt att extrahera från vatten på grund av dess inneboende motvilja mot att kasta sin hydrering sfären och migrera in mindre polära miljöer. 3 Göra vattensulfat extraktion effektivare normalt kräver komplexa receptorer som är svåra och tråkiga att syntetisera och rena, ofta med giftiga reagens och lösningsmedel. 4,5 Selektiv kristallisation ger en enkel men effektiv alternativ till sulfat separation från vatten. 6-9 Även om vissa metallkatjoner såsom Ba 2+, Pb 2+ eller Ra 2+ bildar mycket olösliga sulfatsalterna, är inte alltid praktiskt deras användning i sulfat separation på grund av deras höga toxiort och ibland-låg selektivitet. Med användning av organiska ligander som sulfatfällnings drar fördel av den strukturella mångfalden och mottaglighet för att utforma karakteristisk till organiska molekyler. En idealisk organisk ligand för vattenhaltig sulfat kristallisation bör vara löslig i vatten, men ändå bilda ett olösligt sulfatsalt eller komplex i en relativt kort tid och i närvaro av höga koncentrationer av konkurrerande joner. Dessutom bör det vara lätt att syntetisera och återvinna. En sådan en ligand, 1,4-bensen-bis (iminoguanidinium) (BBIG), själv monteras in situ från två kommersiellt tillgängliga prekursorer, tereftalaldehyd och aminoguanidinium klorid, har nyligen visat sig vara mycket effektiv i vattensulfat separation. 10 ligand är vattenlöslig i kloridform, och selektivt kristalliserar med sulfat i ett extremt olösligt salt som lätt kan avlägsnas från lösningen genom enkel filtrering. Den BBIG liganden kan sedan återvinnas genom deprotonering med enqueous NaOH och kristallisation av den neutrala bis-iminoguanidine, som kan omvandlas tillbaka in i kloridform med vattenhaltig HCl, och återanvändas i en annan separationscykel. Effekten av denna ligand i att avlägsna sulfat från vatten är så stor att övervaka den återstående sulfatkoncentrationen i lösning är inte längre en enkel uppgift, som kräver en mer avancerad teknik som möjliggör noggrann mätning av spårmängder av anjonen. För detta ändamål, var radiomärkt 35 S sulfat spårämne i kombination med β räkning vätskescintillation användes, en teknik som vanligen utnyttjas i vätske-vätske-utvinnings separationer, och nyligen visat sig vara effektiva för att övervaka sulfat kristallisering. 8 Detta protokoll demonstrerar en-pot in situ syntes av BBIG ligand och dess kristallisation som sulfatsaltet från vattenlösningar. Ex situ syntes av liganden 11 presenteras också som en convenient metod för produktion av större mängder av BBIG-Cl, som kan lagras i den kristallina formen tills den ska användas. sulfate separation by selective crystallization with a bis-iminoguanidinium ligand

A simple and effective method for selective sulfate separation from aqueous solutions by crystallization with a bis-guanidinium ligand, 1,4-benzene-bis(iminoguanidinium) (BBIG), is demonstrated. The ligand is synthesized as the chloride salt (BBIG-Cl) by in situ imine condensation of terephthalaldehyde with aminoguanidinium chloride in water, followed by crystallization as the sulfate salt (BBIG-SO4). Alternatively, BBIG-Cl is synthesized ex situ in larger scale from ethanol. The sulfate separation ability of the BBIG ligand is demonstrated by selective and quantitative crystallization of sulfate from seawater. The ligand can be recycled by neutralization of BBIG-SO4 with aqueous NaOH and crystallization of the neutral bis-iminoguanidine, which can be converted back into BBIG-Cl with aqueous HCl and reused in another separation cycle. Finally, 35S-labeled sulfate and &#946; liquid scintillation counting are employed for monitoring the sulfate concentration in solution. Overall, this protocol will instruct the user in the necessary skills to synthesize a ligand, employ it in the selective crystallization of sulfate from aqueous solutions, and quantify the separation efficiency.
