الواجهات المائية/الصلبة في كل مكان، وتلعب دوراً أساسيا في العديد من العمليات البيئية والبيولوجية الفيزيائية والتكنولوجية. حل الهيكل الداخلي وسبر ديناميات الهيدروجين-بوند (ح-بوند) من جزيئات المياه تمتز على السطوح الصلبة هي القضايا الأساسية لعلوم المياه، الذي ما زال يشكل تحديا كبيرا بسبب كتلة خفيفة وصغيرة الحجم للهيدروجين. المسح النفقي مجهرية (STM) أداة واعدة لمهاجمة هذه المشاكل، بفضل قدراته الفرعية انغستروم القرار المكانية وحساسية الذبذبات واحد-السندات والتلاعب الذرية/الجزيئية. يتكون نظام التجريبية المصممة من تلميح Cl منتهية وعينه ملفقة بالجرعات المياه الجزيئات في الموقع إلى الاتحاد الأفريقي (111)-أيدت السطوح NaCl(001). أفلام كلوريد الصوديوم العازلة إلكترونيا فصل الماء من الركازات المعدنية، حيث يتم الاحتفاظ بالمدارات الحدود الجوهرية لجزيئات الماء.
