De methode gerapporteerd in dit werk biedt een eenvoudige en effectieve aanpak voor de oppervlakte modificatie van MOF kristallen door directe reactie met synthetische catechols milde omstandigheden ongeacht de functionaliteit van de keten. In tegenstelling tot de conventionele benadering van het produceren van polydopamine-achtige coatings, kan deze route worden uitgevoerd onder watervrij en anaërobe omstandigheden en zonder enige basis toevoeging dat de stabiliteit van de MOF in gevaar kan brengen. Metaal-organische kaders zijn een klasse van kristallijne poreuze materialen opgebouwd uit anorganische metalen onderdelen, meestal genoemd secundaire gebouw eenheden (SBUs), bij elkaar gehouden door de organische liganden polytopic via coördinatieve bindingen. De zelf-assemblage van deze SBUs met de organische linkers maakt de vorming van uitgebreide 3D poreuze structuren met zeer hoge oppervlakten en veelbelovende toepassingen op het gebied van gas opslag en scheiding1,2, katalyse en Sensing3. De belangrijkste beperking voor hun toepasbaarheid is echter hun slechte stabiliteit in water4,5want allermeest zij nemen divalente metalen in hun structuur die in labiele coördinatie obligaties, als degenen die zich voordoen bij klassieke resulteert materialen zoals MOF-5,6of7van de HKUST.
Gemeenschappelijke aanpak van dit probleem op te lossen betrekken aan de ene kant, de totstandbrenging van sterkere coördinatie obligaties door het gebruik van zeer geladen metalen, zoals Zr of Ti(IV), basic N-donor liganden7,8 of liganden houdende zuren en elementaire sites9. Echter, deze methode is beperkt tot nieuwe materialen en staat niet toe om de stabiliteit van MOFs al beschikbaar. Aan de andere kant, de benaderingen ter verbetering van de stabiliteit van de reeds bekende materialen de post synthetische modificatie methoden gebruiken om te introduceren hydrofobe wordt in de lege ruimte na synthetische wijziging van de linker10,11 of door chemische vapour deposition (CVD)12. Helaas komt de stabiliteit van deze methoden op de kosten van een drastische vermindering van de porositeit van het materiaal en het gebruik van geavanceerde instrumentatie. Het recent gebruik van gemodificeerde phosphonic zuren, zoals 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate (DOPA)13 of n- octadecylphosphonic zuur (OPA)14, om hydrophobicity in de bekende Zr(IV) MOFs hieraan moet ook worden onderstreept.
Catechol stoffen, zoals dopamine, zijn uitvoerig gebruikt om een breed scala van materialen door de vorming van polydopamine15functionalize. De vorming van deze coatings is echter beperkt tot het gebruik van gebufferde waterigeoplossingen voor licht basische oplossingen die niet geschikt voor MOFs met labiele obligaties zijn. Bortoluzzi et al. rapporteerde onlangs dat polydopamine kan worden geproduceerd in oplossing door een binuclear Cu(II) complex met Cu2(µ-O) als een katalytische16 centrum waarin catecholase-achtige katalytische activiteit denken van natuurlijke enzymen zoals catechol oxidase17 en tyrosinase18. Meer recentelijk hebben we laten zien hoe een MOF op basis van Cu(II) peddel-wiel SBUs verbonden door middel van trimesate linkers, bekend als HKUST, kan worden beschermd tegen Hydrolytische afbraak door de polymerisatie van matiemaatschappij catechols, zoals 4-hepatdecyl-catechol (hdcat) of gefluoreerde-4-undecylcatechol (fdcat), op het oppervlak van de kristallen19. Deze eenvoudige methode bewijst hoe efficiënt functionele coatings kan worden gesynthetiseerd onder milde omstandigheden ongeacht de functionaliteit van het catechol en zonder het gebruik van bufferoplossingen die de stabiliteit van het kader, als gevolg van de biomimetische in gevaar kunnen brengen katalytische activiteit van het Cu(II)-eenheden. Wij zijn van mening dat deze nieuwe methode kan de vorming van functionele coatings waarmee, naast het beschermen tegen de aantasting van het Hydrolytische, misschien selectieve adsorptie van chirale moleculen of vluchtige organische stoffen.

Metaal-organische kaders (MOFs) vormen een klasse van poreuze anorganische materialen met veelbelovende eigenschappen in de opslag van gas en scheiding, katalyse en sensing. De belangrijkste kwestie beperken hun toepasbaarheid is echter hun slechte stabiliteit in vochtige omstandigheden. De gemeenschappelijke methoden om dit probleem te overwinnen betrekken de vorming van sterk metaal-linker obligaties met behulp van metalen, zeer te betalen die is beperkt tot een aantal structuren, de invoering van alkylic groepen in het kader van post synthetische wijziging (PSM) of chemische damp deposition (CVD) ter verbetering van de algemene hydrophobicity van het kader. Deze laatste twee leiden meestal tot een drastische vermindering van de porositeit van het materiaal. Deze strategieën niet mogelijk is te benutten van de eigenschappen van de MOF al beschikbaar en het is absoluut noodzakelijk om te vinden van nieuwe methoden ter verbetering van de stabiliteit van MOFs in water met behoud van hun eigenschappen intact. Hierin, rapporteren we een nieuwe methode om de stabiliteit van de water van kristallen van MOF met Cu2(O2C)4 peddel-wiel eenheden, zoals HKUST (waarbij HKUST staat voor Hong Kong University of Science & Technology), met de catechols matiemaatschappij met alkyl- en fluor-alkyl ketens. Door gebruik te maken van de onverzadigde metalen sites en de katalytische activiteit van het catecholase-achtige van CuII ionen, zijn wij in staat om robuuste hydrofobe coatings door de oxidatie en latere polymerisatie van het catechol-eenheden op het oppervlak van de kristallen onder anaërobe en watervrij omstandigheden zonder het verstoren van de onderliggende structuur van het kader. Deze aanpak niet alleen het materiaal met verbeterde water stabiliteit biedt maar ook biedt controle over de functie van de beschermende coating, waardoor de ontwikkeling van functionele coatings voor de adsorptie en scheidingen van vluchtige organische stoffen . Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat deze benadering kan ook worden uitgebreid tot andere unstable MOFs met open metalen sites.

Alle reagentia en materialen werden opgeslagen in de handschoen-box en gebruikt als ontvangen zonder enige verdere zuivering, tenzij anders vermeld. Het hele proces wordt uitgevoerd in een handschoen-vak om te voorkomen dat contact met vochtigheid die het ongecoat materiaal kon degraderen.

Surface Functionalization of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Improved Moisture Resistance

Improving water stability is critical for the integration of MOFs into chemically demanding applications. Our method can help to increase the stability of MOFs that are not stable in water. The main advantage of this technique is that not only allows the modification of the hydrophobicity of the coated material, but also allows us to have control over the functionality of the coating.This technique takes advantage of the catalytic open metal sites present in some MOFs, which can trigger the polymerization of the catechol molecules on the surface of the crystals without affecting the overall porosity of the material. First, bring a four-milliliter glass vial, two spatulas, and a one-milliliter micropipette into a glove box. Special care must be taken in order to maintain oxygen-free reaction conditions.Add 50 milligrams of hdcat into the glass vial. Then, add one milliliter of anhydrous chloroform to the glass vial. Following this, add 10 milligrams of HKUST to the hdcat solution, and seal the vial tightly.After removing the vial from the glove box, sonicate the suspension of HKUST and hdcat for a few seconds to homogenize the solution. Make sure the vial is tightly sealed, and place it in an oven at 70 degrees Celsius overnight. After removing the vial from the oven, transfer it to the glove box with a 15-milliliter centrifuge tube.In the glove box, transfer the contents of the vial to the centrifuge tube using fresh anhydrous chloroform. After removing the centrifuge tube from the glove box, separate the coated material by centrifugation at 3, 354 times g for one minute. Once the centrifuge tube is returned to the glove box, carefully extract the supernatant using a dropper and store it in a clean 40-milliliter glass vial.Next, suspend the coated material in three milliliters of anhydrous chloroform in order to remove polymerized catechol units that are not attached to the surface of the crystals. After removing the chloroform, suspend the coated material in three milliliters of anhydrous methanol in order to remove unreacted hdcat molecules. After repeating the washing step three times, transfer the washed hdcat-HKUST to a glass vial using anhydrous methanol.Once the coated solid has settled at the bottom of the vial, remove the supernatant and allow the powder to dry at room temperature in the glove box. Bring a four-milliliter glass vial, two spatulas, and a one-milliliter micropipette into the glove box. Add 50 milligrams of fdcat to the glass vial.Then, add one milliliter of anhydrous chloroform to the glass vial. Next, add 10 milligrams of HKUST to the fdcat solution, and seal the vial tightly. After removing the vial from the glove box, sonicate the suspension of HKUST and fdcat for a few seconds to homogenize the solution.Make sure the vial is tightly sealed, and place it in the oven at 70 degrees Celsius overnight. After removing the vial from the oven, transfer it to the glove box with a 15-milliliter centrifuge tube. In the glove box, transfer the contents of the vial to the centrifuge tube using fresh anhydrous chloroform.After removing the centrifuge tube from the glove box, separate the coated material by centrifugation at 3, 354 times g for one minute. Once the centrifuge tube is returned to the glove box, carefully extract the supernatant using a dropper and store it in a clean 40-milliliter glass vial. Following this, suspend the coated material in three milliliters of anhydrous chloroform in order to remove polymerized catechol units that are not attached to the surface of the crystals.After removing the chloroform, suspend the coated material in three milliliters of anhydrous methanol in order to remove unreacted fdcat molecules. After repeating the washing step three times, transfer the washed fdcat-HKUST to a glass vial using anhydrous methanol. Once the coated solid has settled at the bottom of the vial, remove the supernatant and allow the powder to dry at room temperature in the glove box.The surface-modified crystals show increased hydrophobicity when soaked in water. In comparison with HKUST, which immediately sinks to the bottom of the vial, hdcat-HKUST and fdcat-HKUST can stand in water for several days without sinking. Contact angle measurements confirm their superior hydrophobicity.The FT-IR spectrum of hdcat-HKUST shows bands corresponding to alkane C-H stretching vibrations of the hdcat alkyl chain, which are not present in HKUST. For fdcat-HKUST, alkane C-F stretching vibrations are visible in the spectrum, which are not observed in HKUST. SEM images of hdcat-HKUST and fdcat-HKUST show an external corrugated layer surrounding the crystals, which suggests an effective polymerization on the crystals while respecting their morphology.XPS measurements show the presence of copper I in hdcat-HKUST and fdcat-HKUST, which is attributed to the reaction of the catechol moieties by copper units on the surface and subsequent polymerization. The formation of catecholate coatings on HKUST proceeded with no impact on the crystalline structure of HKUST, as confirmed by powder x-ray diffraction measurements. This was also confirmed by porosity measurements at 77 kelvin, which showed that hdcat-HKUST and fdcat-HKUST retain their surface area with minor variations after the coating process.While attempting this procedure, it's important to maintain oxygen-free reaction conditions, as oxygen could promote the polymerization of the catechol molecules in solution rather than on the surface of the crystals. Following this procedure, we have been able to modify the wettability of MOF materials by simple functionalization of their external surfaces. Also, this technique enables us to have control over the functionality of the coating, which enables us to have novel functionalities which were not present in the bare material, such as chiral separation or VOCs capture.
