本文采用麦克斯韦电子能量分布函数（EEDF）的理想情况。当然，在许多情况下会出现非理想，但这些不是这项工作的主题。例如，在材料加工蚀刻和沉积等离子体系统中，通常是射频生成和维持的，存在在等离子体中产生挥发性化学自由基的分子气体原料，以及包括带负电荷的离子在内的多种离子种类。等离子体变成电负性，即在准中性等离子体中以负离子的形式具有很大一部分负电荷。在具有分子中性和离子的等离子体中，电子和分子种类之间的非弹性碰撞可以在电流-电压特性中产生下降15 ，并且相对于电子而言冷的负离子的存在可以在等离子体电位附近产生显着的扭曲16 ，当然所有这些都是非麦克斯韦特征。我们在本文讨论的工作中，在单一离子种类惰性气体（氩气）直流放电等离子体中进行了实验，没有这些非麦克斯韦效应。然而，在这些放电中通常发现双麦克斯韦EEDF，这是由腔室壁的二次电子发射17 的存在引起的。较热电子的这种成分通常是冷电子温度的几倍，密度小于1%，通常很容易与体电子密度和温度区分开来。
当 VB 变得比 φ 更负时，电子被探针表面的负电位部分排斥，并且 ln（Ie） 与 VB 的斜率为 e/Te，即。1/TeV ，其中TeV 是以eV为单位的电子温度，如 图1B所示。确定 TeV 后，等离子体密度可以推导出为：

离子电流的衍生方式与电子电流不同。离子被认为是“冷的”，因为它们的质量相对较大，与电子的质量相比，Mi >> me，因此，在弱电离等离子体中，离子与处于壁温的中性气体原子处于相当好的热平衡。如果 VB φ，离子会被探针护套排斥≥ 如果 VB <φ则被收集。对于负偏置探针，收集的离子电流近似恒定，而对于比等离子体电位更负的探针偏置电压，探针的电子通量会减小。由于电子饱和电流远大于离子饱和电流，因此探针收集的总电流减小。随着探头偏置变得越来越负，收集的电流下降或大或小，如上文式（1a）所述。该近似值中的离子电流方程为：

我们注意到，由于沿探针前鞘的加速度，探针收集的恒定离子通量超过了随机热离子通量，因此离子以玻姆速度18 uB 而不是离子热速度19 到达探针的鞘缘。离子的密度等于电子，因为前鞘是准中性的。比较方程 5 和方程 2 中的离子和电子饱和电流，我们观察到离子对探针电流的贡献比电子 <img alt="Equation 10" src="/files/ftp_upload/61804/61804equ10.jpg">的贡献小 。在氩等离子体的情况下，该系数约为 108。
有一个急剧的过渡点，电子电流从指数变为常数，称为“拐点”。拐点处的探头偏置可以近似为等离子体电位。在实际实验中，这个膝盖从来都不是锋利的，而是圆形的，这是由于探针的空间电荷效应，即探针周围护套的膨胀，以及探针污染和等离子体噪声13。
朗缪尔探针技术基于收集电流，而发射探针技术基于电流发射。发射探头既不测量温度也不测量密度。相反，它们提供精确的等离子体电位测量，并且由于它们对等离子体流不敏感，因此可以在各种情况下运行。Sheehan 和Hershkowitz 20 的专题评论以及其中的参考文献充分讨论了发射探针的理论和用法。
对于等离子体密度 1011 ≤ ne ≤ 1018 m-3，建议采用零发射极限中的拐点技术，即取一系列 I-V 迹线，每个迹线具有不同的灯丝加热电流，找到每个 I-V 迹线的拐点偏置电压，并将拐点外推到零发射极限，得到等离子体电位， 如 图 2 所示。
一个普遍的假设是，朗缪尔和发射探针技术在准中性等离子体中是一致的，但在鞘中是鞘中不一致的，鞘是等离子体与空间电荷出现的边界接触的区域。该研究的重点是在低温、低压等离子体中等离子体边界附近的等离子体电位，以测试这一共同假设。为了比较朗缪尔探针和发射探头的电位测量结果，还通过对朗缪尔探针I-V应用拐点技术来确定等离子体电位，如 图3所示。一般接受1 ，等离子体电位是通过找到探头偏置电压来求得的，在该电压下，收集的电流的二阶导数相对于偏置电压（ <img alt="Equation 11" src="/files/ftp_upload/61804/61804equ11.jpg">即 dI/dV 曲线的峰值）相对于探头偏置电压进行区分。 图3 显示了如何找到以 dI/dV为单位的最大值，即电流-电压特性的拐点。
Langmuir探头（收集式）和发射式探头（发射式）具有不同的I-V特性，这也取决于探头尖端的几何形状，如 图4所示。在制造探针之前，必须考虑探针的空间电荷效应。在实验中，对于平面朗缪尔探针，我们使用了1/4英寸的平面钽盘。我们可以收集更多的电流，用更大的圆盘获得更大的信号。然而，为了应用上述分析，探针 的面积 Ap 必须保持小于腔室的电子损耗面积 Aw，满足21 的不等 <img alt="Equation 12" src="/files/ftp_upload/61804/61804equ12.jpg">式。对于圆柱形朗缪尔探头，我们使用0.025毫米厚，1厘米长的钨丝作为圆柱形朗缪尔探头，使用相同厚度的钨丝作为发射探头。需要注意的是，对于圆柱形朗缪尔探针，对于这些实验的等离子体参数，探针尖端的半径 rp 远小于其长度 Lp，小于 Debye 长度 λD;即 <img alt="Equation 13" src="/files/ftp_upload/61804/61804equ13.jpg">、 和 <img alt="Equation 14" src="/files/ftp_upload/61804/61804equ14.jpg">。在这个参数范围内，应用轨道运动极限理论和Laframboise对热电子和离子的发展22 ，我们发现对于等于或大于等离子体电位的探针偏置电压，收集的电子电流可以通过以下形式的 <img alt="Equation 15" src="/files/ftp_upload/61804/61804equ15.jpg">函数进行参数化，其中指数 <img alt="Equation 16" src="/files/ftp_upload/61804/61804equ16.jpg">.这里重要的一点是，对于该指数小于单位的值，如上一段所述，用于确定等离子体电位的拐点方法也适用于圆柱形朗缪尔探针。
