In deze studie zijn we geïnteresseerd in het begrijpen hoe organismen omgaan met antropogene omgevingen zoals steden, bermen en akkers. We gebruiken koolwitte vlinders als systeem omdat ze gemakkelijk experimenteel te manipuleren zijn. We bestuderen bijvoorbeeld de intolerantie voor genetische variatie voor stedelijke verontreinigende stoffen.
We verzamelen monsters van verschillende locaties en populaties om variatie over soorten of ruimte te bestuderen. Netten, koelers en enveloppen zijn onze belangrijkste hulpmiddelen in het veld. Vlindereigenschappen worden gemeten door microscopie en ICP-MS is de beste methode om concentraties zware metalen in kleine monsters te meten.
Een van de huidige experimentele uitdagingen is het bestuderen van de variatie tussen soorten en hun ontwikkelingsaanpassingen aan menselijke omgevingen. De grootste moeilijkheid ligt in het kweken van diverse soorten onder gecontroleerde experimentele omstandigheden. Hoewel koolwitte vlinders gemakkelijk te kweken zijn, vormt het vinden van geschikte analoge diëten voor 10 of 20 verschillende soorten die zich voeden met verschillende planten een aanzienlijke uitdaging vanuit een experimenteel perspectief.
We zijn geïnteresseerd in het verminderen van de blootstelling aan stedelijke toxines, de ecologische interventies die de toxiciteit van zware metalen en andere stedelijke verontreinigende stoffen, zoals microplastics, kunnen verminderen, worden onderzocht. Daarnaast willen we onderzoeken hoe we leefgebieden in stedelijke ruimtes kunnen ontwerpen om de gezondheid van planten en dieren die daar leven, inclusief mensen, aan te moedigen.
