La morfologia mitocondriale è stata ampiamente studiata nella malattia di Parkinson e in altre malattie in vitro. Tuttavia, mancano ancora protocolli per lo studio della morfologia mitocondriale in vivo. Questo protocollo fornisce un metodo robusto per colorare i mitocondri nel tessuto cerebrale e spiega in dettaglio come eseguire l'analisi morfologica.
Questo studio dimostra che l'immunocolorazione combinata con l'analisi delle immagini è un metodo affidabile per comprendere la morfologia mitocondriale. Permette infatti di quantificare il numero di mitocondri e altri parametri morfologici, come l'aspect ratio sia in coltura cellulare che in tessuto.
