Il nostro gruppo si è concentrato sullo sviluppo di materiali per applicazioni legate all'energia, ponendo l'accento sull'accumulo di energia e sull'elettricità termica. Abbiamo usato i nanocristalli come elementi costitutivi o precursori per la costruzione dei materiali microscopici. E studiamo la trasformazione che i nanocristalli subiscono in solidi interi, con l'obiettivo di migliorare le prestazioni e comprendendo e controllando le proprietà derivate dalle caratteristiche su scala nanometrica.
In particolare, per i materiali termoelettrici, ci siamo concentrati sul controllo dei difetti. Lo sviluppo di materiali termoelettrici attraverso l'elaborazione in soluzione comporta numerose sfide. Uno, mitigare l'ossidazione dovuta all'elevato rapporto superficie/volume delle nanoparticelle.
Riproducibilità, grazie alla complessità del processo. E tre, trattare con le specie volatili per garantire la stabilità. Affrontare e comprendere queste sfide è fondamentale per migliorare l'efficienza dei materiali termoelettrici per le applicazioni pratiche.
La nostra ricerca ha avanzato materiali termoelettrici elaborati in soluzione economica, ottimizzando le proprietà delle nanoparticelle e la loro organizzazione. Stiamo scoprendo la chimica coinvolta nell'intero processo, dalla sintesi delle nanoparticelle al consolidamento finale. E attualmente, ci stiamo concentrando su come le specie superficiali influenzano la microstruttura dei materiali e quindi le loro prestazioni.
Abbiamo migliorato le prestazioni termoelettriche attraverso l'utilizzo di particelle ingegnerizzate in superficie del processo in soluzione, riducendo significativamente la conduttività termica grazie alla messa a punto microstrutturale e all'introduzione di difetti. Questo approccio è anche vantaggioso, perché utilizza precursori economici, basse temperature e inoltre utilizziamo l'acqua come solvente. Abbiamo scoperto che alcune molecole assorbono la superficie delle particelle e limitano la crescita dei grani.
Ora, stiamo cercando di razionalizzare il modo in cui le diverse specie superficiali influenzano la microstruttura e quindi le proprietà di trasporto, in base alla loro composizione, instabilità chimica e natura di legame.
