Gruppen vår fokuserte på å utvikle materialer for energirelaterte applikasjoner, med vekt på energilagring og termisk elektrisitet. Vi brukte nanokrystaller som byggesteiner, eller forløpere for å konstruere de mikroskopiske materialene. Og vi undersøker transformasjonen nanokrystallene gjennomgår til hele faste stoffer, med sikte på å forbedre ytelsen, og ved å forstå og kontrollere egenskapene som er avledet fra nanoskala-funksjonene.
Spesielt for termiske elektriske materialer fokuserte vi på defektkontroll. Utvikling av termoelektriske materialer via løsningsprosessering innebærer mange utfordringer. En, dempende oksidasjon på grunn av nanopartiklenes høye overflate-til-volum-forhold.
Reproduserbarhet, på grunn av kompleksiteten i prosessen. Og tre, håndtering av flyktige arter for å sikre stabilitet. Å adressere og forstå disse utfordringene er avgjørende for å forbedre effektiviteten til termiske elektriske materialer for praktiske bruksområder.
Vår forskning avanserte kostnadseffektive løsningsbehandlede termiske elektriske materialer, ved å finjustere nanopartikkelegenskaper og deres organisering. Vi avdekker kjemien som er involvert i hele prosessen, fra nanopartikkelsyntesen til den endelige konsolideringen. Og for tiden er vi fokusert på hvordan overflatearter eller påvirker materialers mikrostruktur, og dermed deres ytelse.
Vi forbedret termoelektrisk ytelse gjennom å bruke løsningsprosessen overflatekonstruerte partikler, noe som reduserer varmeledningsevnen betydelig ved mikrostrukturell justering og innføring av defekter. Denne tilnærmingen er også fordelaktig, fordi den bruker billige forløpere, lave temperaturer, og vi bruker også vann som løsningsmiddel. Vi fant at visse molekyler absorberes på partikkeloverflaten og begrenser kornveksten.
Nå prøver vi å rasjonalisere hvordan forskjellige overflatearter påvirker mikrostruktur og dermed transportegenskaper, basert på deres sammensetning, kjemisk ustabilitet og bindingsnatur.
