Nosso grupo se concentrou no desenvolvimento de materiais para aplicações relacionadas à energia, enfatizando o armazenamento de energia e a eletricidade térmica. Usamos nanocristais como blocos de construção ou precursores para a construção dos materiais microscópicos. E investigamos a transformação que os nanocristais sofrem em sólidos inteiros, com o objetivo de melhorar o desempenho e entender e controlar as propriedades derivadas das características em nanoescala.
Em particular, para materiais elétricos térmicos, nos concentramos no controle de defeitos. O desenvolvimento de materiais termoelétricos por meio do processamento de soluções envolve inúmeros desafios. Um, mitigando a oxidação devido à alta relação superfície/volume das nanopartículas.
Reprodutibilidade, devido à complexidade do processo. E três, lidar com espécies voláteis para garantir a estabilidade. Abordar e compreender esses desafios é crucial para aumentar a eficiência dos materiais termoelétricos para aplicações práticas.
Nossa pesquisa avançou em materiais elétricos térmicos processados em solução econômica, ajustando as propriedades das nanopartículas e sua organização. Estamos descobrindo a química envolvida em todo o processo, desde a síntese das nanopartículas até a consolidação final. E atualmente, estamos focados em como as espécies de superfície afetam a microestrutura dos materiais e, portanto, seu desempenho.
Melhoramos o desempenho termoelétrico por meio da utilização de partículas de engenharia de superfície de processo de solução, reduzindo significativamente a condutividade térmica por ajuste microestrutural e introdução de defeitos. Essa abordagem também é vantajosa, pois utiliza precursores baratos, baixas temperaturas e, além disso, usamos água como solvente. Descobrimos que certas moléculas absorvem na superfície da partícula e restringem o crescimento do grão.
Agora, estamos tentando racionalizar como diferentes espécies de superfície afetam a microestrutura e, portanto, as propriedades de transporte, com base em sua composição, instabilidade química e natureza de ligação.
