Nuestro grupo se centró en el desarrollo de materiales para aplicaciones relacionadas con la energía, haciendo hincapié en el almacenamiento de energía y la electricidad térmica. Utilizamos nanocristales como bloques de construcción o precursores para construir los materiales microscópicos. E investigamos la transformación que sufren los nanocristales en sólidos completos, con el objetivo de mejorar el rendimiento y comprender y controlar las propiedades derivadas de las características a nanoescala.
En particular, para los materiales termoeléctricos, nos centramos en el control de defectos. El desarrollo de materiales termoeléctricos mediante el procesamiento en solución implica numerosos desafíos. Uno, mitigar la oxidación debido a la alta relación superficie/volumen de las nanopartículas.
Reproducibilidad, debido a la complejidad del proceso. Y tres, tratar con especies volátiles para garantizar la estabilidad. Abordar y comprender estos desafíos es crucial para mejorar la eficiencia de los materiales termoeléctricos para aplicaciones prácticas.
Nuestra investigación avanzó en materiales termoeléctricos procesados en soluciones rentables, mediante el ajuste fino de las propiedades de las nanopartículas y su organización. Estamos descubriendo la química involucrada en todo el proceso, desde la síntesis de nanopartículas hasta la consolidación final. Y actualmente, nos centramos en cómo las especies de superficie o afectan a la microestructura de los materiales y, por tanto, a su rendimiento.
Mejoramos el rendimiento termoeléctrico a través de la utilización de partículas de ingeniería superficial del proceso de solución, reduciendo significativamente la conductividad térmica mediante el ajuste microestructural y la introducción de defectos. Este enfoque también es ventajoso, porque utiliza precursores baratos, bajas temperaturas, y además, utilizamos agua como disolvente. Descubrimos que ciertas moléculas se absorben en la superficie de la partícula y restringen el crecimiento del grano.
Ahora, estamos tratando de racionalizar cómo las diferentes especies de superficie afectan la microestructura y, por lo tanto, las propiedades de transporte, en función de su composición, inestabilidad química y naturaleza de unión.
