Denne undersøgelse giver en hurtig og robust protokol til isolering af Campylobacter fra fødevarer. Det overvinder flere ulemper ved eksisterende metoder og giver fordele for den efterfølgende påvisning og karakterisering af isolat. Skyllemidler i marken er ofte 10.000 gange større end de prøver, der anvendes i fødevaresikkerhedsdetekteringsassays, såsom PCR.
Der er behov for at reducere fejlen ved delstikprøver for at sikre, at resultaterne er repræsentative for den relevante population. Denne protokol er blevet brugt til at isolere over 50 stammer af Campylobacter, som efterfølgende er blevet anvendt i genomiske undersøgelser. Vores data og analyser bidrog til at forstå molekylemekanismerne hos Campylobacter værtsmidler og horisontal genoverførsel.
En sådan størrelse vil lette udviklingen af nye terapeutiske strategier til styring af campylobacterosis. Denne protokol giver mulighed for at reducere delprøveudtagning med en faktor 13 og reducerer også den tid, der kræves for at isolere Campylobacter fra råt kød med 24 timer eller inden for en otte timers arbejdsdag. Fremtidige undersøgelser kan anvende denne metode til isolering af Campylobacter, ikke kun fra fødevarer, men også fra miljøprøver.
