Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering
Maria Bondesson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering, Indiana University. She received her undergraduate degree in Microbiology from Uppsala University, Sweden, and her PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. After two postdoctoral periods, Dr. Bondesson worked as Assistant Professor at Karolinska Institutet and as a project manager for large European Commission-funded project, before moving to the US in 2009.
Dr. Bondesson’s research focuses on identifying toxic chemicals among environmental pollutants and deciphering the mechanisms by which they act. She uses zebrafish as a model organism for studies of chemicals perturbing embryonic developmental. Her ultimate goal is to protect humans and wildlife from exposure to toxic chemicals.
Combining mouse embryonic stem cells and zebrafish embryos to evaluate developmental toxicity of chemical exposure.
