The fundamental mechanism of electrosorption of ions developing a double layer inside nanopores was studied via a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. A novel graphitized-carbon monolithic material has proven to be a good electrical double-layer capacitor that can be applied in the separation of ions from aqueous solutions. An extended electrical double-layer model indicated that the pore size distribution plays a key role in determining the double-layer capacitance in an electrosorption process. Because of the occurrence of double-layer overlapping in narrow pores, mesopores and micropores make significantly different contributions to the double-layer capacitance. Mesopores show good electrochemical accessibility. Micropores present a slow mass transfer of ions and a considerable loss of double-layer capacitance, associated with a shallow potential distribution inside pores. The formation of the diffuse layer inside the micropores determines the magnitude of the double-layer capacitance at low electrolyte concentrations and at conditions close to the point of zero charge of the material. The effect of the double-layer overlapping on the electrosorption capacitance can be reduced by increasing the pore size, electrolyte concentration, and applied potential. The results are relevant to water deionization.

Electrosorption capacitance of nanostructured carbon-based materials.

The size-sieving properties of a mesoporous carbon membrane were studied via molecular permeation and cyclic voltammetry experiments. Two phenomena, simple diffusion and electrochemically aided diffusion, were investigated. Molecular diffusion through the membrane was caused by a concentration gradient across the membrane and was facilitated by electrosorption of ions under an externally applied electric field. The diffusion of molecules transported through the membrane was characterized by the values of permeability and apparent diffusion coefficient in the membrane. Because larger molecules are more restricted in terms of penetrating the pores, the size-based selectivity of the mesoporous carbon membrane could be readily observed. For example, in the two-component permeation experiment, a high selectivity (alpha=56.9) of anilinium over Rhodamine B was found. It is inferred that the diffusive transport of the larger Rhodamine B molecules with a more extensive retardation comes from the competitive mechanism between the two kinds of molecules in accessing the pore. A series of voltammetric experiments involving a mesoporous carbon membrane immersed in various electrolytes with ions of different sizes allowed the observation of ion-exclusion phenomena. It was found that the size effect is significant for electrochemically aided diffusion and electrosorption processes. The number of cations inside the pores of the membrane decreases with increasing cation size. This phenomenon is due to the size-exclusion effect, which could be demonstrated by the values of electrical double-layer capacitance for sodium, magnesium, and tetrahexylammonium cations, at potentials ranging from negative values to the point of zero charge, corresponding to 86.7, 73.1, and 50.0 F/g, respectively. The findings of this work manifest that the relationship between the pore size and the dimensions of the molecules determines the transport and sorption behavior of nanoporous carbon materials.

Molecular-sieving capabilities of mesoporous carbon membranes.

Neutron imaging is presented as a tool for quantifying the diffusion of ions inside porous materials, such as carbon electrodes used in the desalination process via capacitive deionization and in electrochemical energy-storage devices. Monolithic mesoporous carbon electrodes of ∼10 nm pore size were synthesized based on a soft-template method. The electrodes were used with an aqueous solution of gadolinium nitrate in an electrochemical flow-through cell designed for neutron imaging studies. Sequences of neutron images were obtained under various conditions of applied potential between the electrodes. The images revealed information on the direction and magnitude of ion transport within the electrodes. From the time-dependent concentration profiles inside the electrodes, the average value of the effective diffusion coefficient for gadolinium ions was estimated to be 2.09 ± 0.17 × 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) at 0 V and 1.42 ± 0.06 × 10(-10) m(2) s(-1) at 1.2 V. The values of the effective diffusion coefficient obtained from neutron imaging experiments can be used to evaluate model predictions of the ion transport rate in capacitive deionization and electrochemical energy-storage devices. 

Neutron imaging of ion transport in mesoporous carbon materials.

Polymeric amines such as poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) supported on mesoporous oxides are promising candidate adsorbents for CO2 capture processes. An important aspect to the design and optimization of these materials is a fundamental understanding of how the properties of the oxide support such as pore structure, particle morphology, and surface properties affect the efficiency of the guest polymer in its interactions with CO2. Previously, the efficiency of impregnated PEI to adsorb CO2 was shown to increase upon the addition of Zr as a surface modifier in SBA-15. However, the efficacy of this method to tune the adsorption performance has not been explored in materials of differing textural and morphological nature. Here, these issues are directly addressed via the preparation of an array of SBA-15 support materials with varying textural and morphological properties, as well as varying content of zirconium doped into the material. Zirconium is incorporated into the SBA-15 either during the synthesis of the SBA-15, or postsynthetically via deposition of Zr species onto pure-silica SBA-15. The method of Zr incorporation alters the textural and morphological properties of the parent SBA-15 in different ways. Importantly, the CO2 capacity of SBA-15 impregnated with PEI increases by a maximum of ∼60% with the quantity of doped Zr for a "standard" SBA-15 containing significant microporosity, while no increase in the CO2 capacity is observed upon Zr incorporation for an SBA-15 with reduced microporosity and a larger pore size, pore volume, and particle size. Finally, adsorbents supported on SBA-15 with controlled particle morphology show only modest increases in CO2 capacity upon inclusion of Zr to the silica framework. The data demonstrate that the textural and morphological properties of the support have a more significant impact on the ability of PEI to capture CO2 than the support surface composition. 

Probing the Role of Zr Addition versus Textural Properties in Enhancement of CO₂ Adsorption Performance in Silica/PEI Composite Sorbents.

An innovative strategy for post-synthesis nitrogen-doping of mesoporous carbons (MCs) with high yields (>90%) at low temperatures (230-380 °C) by using a strong base, sodium amide (NaNH2), was developed. The as-prepared N-doped MCs exhibit a significantly enhanced CO2 adsorption performance in terms of capacity and selectivity when compared to their parent MCs. 

An efficient low-temperature route to nitrogen-doping and activation of mesoporous carbons for CO2 capture.

Gas clathrates are both a resource and a hindrance. They store massive quantities of natural gas but also can clog natural gas pipelines, with disastrous consequences. Eco-friendly technologies for controlling and modulating gas clathrate growth are needed. Type I Antifreeze Proteins (AFPs) from cold-water fish have been shown to bind to gas clathrates via repeating motifs of threonine and alanine. We tested whether proteins encoded in the genomes of bacteria native to natural gas clathrates bind to and alter clathrate morphology. We identified putative clathrate-binding proteins (CBPs) with multiple threonine/alanine motifs in a putative operon () in metagenomes from natural clathrate deposits. We recombinantly expressed and purified five CbpA proteins, four of which were stable, and experimentally confirmed that CbpAs bound to tetrahydrofuran (THF) clathrate, a low-pressure analogue for structure II gas clathrate. When grown in the presence of CbpAs, the THF clathrate was polycrystalline and platelike instead of forming single, octahedral crystals. Two CbpAs yielded branching clathrate crystals, similar to the effect of Type I AFP, while the other two produced hexagonal crystals parallel to the [1 1 1] plane, suggesting two distinct binding modes. Bacterial CBPs may find future utility in industry, such as maintaining a platelike structure during gas clathrate transportation.
