Hyeonwi Son, Ph.D. is a senior researcher in the Department of Anatomy in the Gyeongsang National University Medical School at the Republic of Korea. He received a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from Gyeongsang National University. As a graduate student, he elucidated mechanisms governing the development of depressive behavior induced by chronic stress. His work identified a causal relationship between depressive behavior and low levels of glutamate-glutamine in the prefrontal cortex. Beginning in 2015, he carried out his postdoctoral fellowship at Gyeongsang National University. As a postdoc, he identified that postnatal astrocyte function supplying glutamine to neurons is important for glutamatergic synapse development in the hippocampus.
