With the application of a recently developed deposition method called initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD), responsive hydrogel thin films in the order of a few hundred nanometers were created. When in contact with humid air, the hydrogel layer increases its thickness considerably. The measurement of the thickness change was realized interferometrically with a laser and a broadband light source in two different implementations. The relative change in thickness with respect to humidity can be described with the Flory⁻Huggins theory. The required Flory⁻Huggins interaction parameter was determined for the actual hydrogel composition. The setup was designed without electric components in the vicinity of the active sensor layer and is therefore applicable in harsh environments such as explosive or corrosive ones. The implemented sensor prototype delivered reproducible relative humidity ( R H ) values and the achieved response time for an abrupt change of the humidity τ 63 ≤ 2.5 s was about three times faster compared to one of the fastest commercially available sensors on the market.

Fast Optical Humidity Sensor Based on Hydrogel Thin Film Expansion for Harsh Environment.

Sensors for the reliable measurement of nitrogen dioxide concentrations are of high interest due the adverse health effects of this pollutant. This work employs photothermal spectroscopy to measure nitrogen dioxide concentrations at the parts per billion level. Absorption induced temperature changes are detected by means of a fiber-coupled Fabry-Pérot interferometer. The small size of the interferometer enables small detection volumes, paving the way for miniaturized sensing concepts as well as fast response times, demonstrated down to 3 s. A normalized noise equivalent absorption of 7.5 × 10 - 8 cmW/ Hz is achieved. Additionally, due to the rigid structure of the interferometer, the sensitivity to mechanical vibrations is shown to be minor.

Intensity Modulated Photothermal Measurements of NO with a Compact Fiber-Coupled Fabry-Pérot Interferometer.

An in-line holographic particle counter concept is presented and validated where multiple micrometer sized particles are detected in a three dimensional sampling volume, all at once. The proposed PIU is capable of detecting holograms of particles which sizes are in the lower μ m- range. The detection and counting principle is based on common image processing techniques using a customized HT with a result directly relating to the particle number concentration in the recorded sampling volume. The proposed counting unit is mounted ontop of a CNM for comparison with a commercial TSI-3775 CPC. The concept does not only allow for a precise in-situ determination of low particle number concentrations but also enables easy upscaling to higher particle densities (e.g., > 30 . 000 # c c m ) through its linear expandability and option of cascading. The impact of coincidence at higher particle densities is shown and two coincidence correction approaches are presented where, at last, its analogy to the coincidence correction methods used in state-of-the-art CPCs is identified.

Design and Validation of a Holographic Particle Counter.

An aerosol gas exchange system (AGES) for nanoparticle sampling at elevated temperatures was developed, modeled, and further characterized with laboratory tests with respect to gas exchange efficiency and particle losses. The model describing the gas exchange was first verified with oxygen and later studied with several inert gases having molecular masses between 18 and 135 u. The exchange rate of the lightest compounds exceeds 90% efficiency at the flow rates used. In order to reach similarly high removal efficiencies for larger molecules, the residence time in the AGES has to be increased. The removal of sticky gases was studied with gaseous sulfuric acid. Results agreed with the model where the boundary condition is zero concentration on the wall. The AGES exhibits very limited particle losses (<5%) for mono-disperse 6 nm particles. Furthermore, diffusional losses for particles down to 1.2 nm were measured utilizing polydisperse aerosol. The experimental findings are in good agreement with the model derived. As both, gas exchange rate and particle losses, rely on the physical effect of diffusion, an optimization for enhanced gas exchange efficiency will come at the cost of increased diffusional particle losses. The presented model can be used as a tool to redesign and optimize the AGES for a desired application. With an application targeted design, particle dilution can be avoided, which can lead to improved results in many fields of aerosol measurement.

Aerosol gas exchange system (AGES) for nanoparticle sampling at elevated temperatures: Modeling and experimental characterization.

DIH is used in many fields of 3D imaging to locate micro or nano-particles in a volume and determine their size, shape or trajectories. A variety of different wavefront reconstruction approaches have been developed for 3D profiling and tracking to study particles' morphology or visualize flow fields. The novel application of HPCs requires observing particle densities in a given sampling volume which does not strictly necessitate the reconstruction of particles. Such typically spherical objects yield circular intereference patterns-also referred to as fringe patterns-at the hologram plane which can be detected by simpler 2D image processing means. The determination of particle number concentrations (number of particles/unit volume [#/cm 3 ]) may therefore be based on the counting of fringe patterns at the hologram plane. In this work, we explain the nature of fringe patterns and extract the most relevant features provided at the hologram plane. The features aid the identification and selection of suitable pattern recognition techniques and its parameterization. We then present three different techniques which are customized for the detection and counting of fringe patterns and compare them in terms of detection performance and computational speed.

A Comparison of Different Counting Methods for a Holographic Particle Counter: Designs, Validations and Results.

Increasing the length of wind turbine blades for maximum energy capture leads to larger loads and forces acting on the blades. In particular, alternate bending due to gravity or nonuniform wind profiles leads to increased loads and imminent fatigue. Therefore, blade monitoring in operation is needed to optimise turbine settings and, consequently, to reduce alternate bending. In our approach, an acceleration model was used to analyse periodically occurring deviations from uniform bending. By using hierarchical clustering, significant bending patterns could be extracted and patterns were analysed with regard to reference data. In a simulation of alternate bending effects, various effects were successfully represented by different bending patterns. A real data experiment with accelerometers mounted at the blade tip of turbine blades demonstrated a clear relation between the rotation frequency and the resulting bending patterns. Additionally, the markedness of bending shapes could be used to assess the amount of alternate bending of the blade in both simulations and experiment.s The results demonstrate that model-based bending shapes provide a strong indication for alternate bending and, consequently, can be used to optimise turbine settings.

Moving Accelerometers to the Tip: Monitoring of Wind Turbine Blade Bending Using 3D Accelerometers and Model-Based Bending Shapes.

The response time of state-of-the-art humidity sensors is ≈8 s. A faster tracking of humidity change is especially required for health care devices. This research is focused on the direct nanostructuring of a humidity-sensitive polymer thin film and it is combined with an optical read-out method. The goal is to improve the response time by changing the surface-to-volume ratio of the thin film and to test a different measurement method compared to state-of-the-art sensors. Large and homogeneous nanostructured areas are fabricated by nanoimprint lithography on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) thin films. Those thin films are made by initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD). To the author's knowledge, this is the first time nanoimprint lithography is applied on iCVD polymer thin films. With the imprinting process, a diffraction grating is developed in the visible wavelength regime. The optical and physicochemical behavior of the nanostructures is modeled with multi-physic simulations. After successful modeling and fabrication a first proof of concept shows that humidity dependency by using an optical detection of the first diffraction order peak is observable. The response time of the structured thin film results to be at least three times faster compared to commercial sensors.

Humidity Responsive Reflection Grating Made by Ultrafast Nanoimprinting of a Hydrogel Thin Film.

This work presents a method to determine the type of Lamb mode (antisymmetric or symmetric) that propagates through a lithium-ion pouch cell. To determine the type of mode and the group velocity at a specific frequency, two- and three-transducer setups were created. For these setups, it is important that all transducers have the same polarization direction. Two transducers are affixed to the center of the cell at a distance of several centimeters from each other so that the group velocity can be determined. Using cross-correlation, the group velocity of the emerging mode can be calculated. The measurement setup and the processing method was first validated with experiments on acrylic glass and aluminum plates. The measurements were supported with FEM simulations and a numerically calculated model. The output voltages of the receiving piezo-elements obtained in the FEM simulation are in agreement with the underlying theories. The phase shift, which results from the output voltage of the piezo-elements mounted one above the other on different sides of the plate, shows the type of mode. The results of the experimental determination of the Lamb mode that propagates through a lithium-ion pouch cell were validated with a numerically calculated multi-layer model and therefore validate this novel experimental approach.

Determination of Lamb Wave Modes on Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Piezoelectric Transducers.

Photothermal spectroscopy (PTS) is a promising sensing technique for the measurement of gases and aerosols. PTS systems using a Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI) are considered particularly promising owing to their robustness and potential for miniaturization. However, limited information is available on viable procedures for signal improvement through parameter tuning. In our work, we use an FPI-based PTS configuration, in which the excitation laser irradiates the target collinearly to the flowing gas. We demonstrate that the generated thermal wave, and thus the signal intensity, is significantly affected by the ratio between excitation modulation frequency and gas flow velocity towards another. We provide an analytical model that predicts the signal intensity with particular considerations of these two parameter settings and validate the findings experimentally. The results reveal the existence of an optimal working regime, depending on the modulation frequency and flow velocity.
