Psychology is the scientific discipline dedicated to understanding both observable behavior and the internal mental processes underlying such behavior. It aims to comprehend human nature and apply this understanding to solve practical problems, enhance well-being, and improve societal outcomes. An example of psychology's application is the study of prosocial behavior, such as why and under what conditions individuals might help strangers in need. This process involves describing observed actions (e.g., a person assisting a fallen stranger), predicting occurrences based on variables (like mood or gender), and explaining the underlying reasons behind these actions.

In the psychological context, behavior includes all directly observable actions, ranging from verbal communication to physical interactions. Mental processes, however, refer to internal experiences, such as thoughts, feelings, and motivations. These internal states, from the anticipation of an action to the emotional response to a situation, are tangible and measurable through psychology.

The concept of naive realism plays a critical role in understanding the limitations of common sense in accurately perceiving the world. Naive realism is the assumption that our perception of Reality is a complete and accurate representation of the world, suggesting that "seeing is believing" and trusting our direct observations and intuitive perceptions as wholly reliable. While this belief system is beneficial in immediate, straightforward scenarios (e.g., avoiding an oncoming vehicle), it often leads to misconceptions, such as about the earth's shape or the movement of celestial bodies. More subtly, it influences our self-assessment and understanding of others, often leading us to believe in our objectivity while attributing bias to those with differing viewpoints. This phenomenon underscores the importance of psychological science in challenging and refining our understanding of human nature.

Through its rigorous scientific methodology, psychology transcends the limitations of Naive realism, offering a deeper and more accurate understanding of human behavior and mental processes. By examining the complexities of our actions and the internal mechanisms that drive them, psychology provides invaluable insights into the human condition, guiding individual and collective efforts toward a more informed and conscientious society.
