The involvement of occipital cortex in sensory processing is not restricted solely to the visual modality. Tactile processing has been shown to modulate higher-order visual and multisensory integration areas in sighted as well as visually deprived subjects; however, the extent of involvement of early visual cortical areas remains unclear. To investigate this issue, we employed functional magnetic resonance imaging in normally sighted, briefly blindfolded subjects with well-defined visuotopic borders as they tactually explored and rated raised-dot patterns. Tactile task performance resulted in significant activation in primary visual cortex (V1) and deactivation of extrastriate cortical regions V2, V3, V3A, and hV4 with greater deactivation in dorsal subregions and higher visual areas. These results suggest that tactile processing affects occipital cortex via two distinct pathways: a suppressive top-down pathway descending through the visual cortical hierarchy and an excitatory pathway arising from outside the visual cortical hierarchy that drives area V1 directly.

Le traitement tactile a &#xE9;t&#xE9; montr&#xE9; pour moduler d&#x26;#39;ordre sup&#xE9;rieur des zones d&#x26;#39;int&#xE9;gration multisensorielle visuels et en aper&#xE7;us sujets ainsi que visuellement priv&#xE9;, mais le degr&#xE9; de participation des premi&#xE8;res aires corticales visuelles reste incertaine. Ces r&#xE9;sultats sugg&#xE8;rent que le traitement tactile affecte cortex occipital par deux voies distinctes: une suppressif de haut en bas de la voie descendante dans la hi&#xE9;rarchie visuelle corticale et une voie excitatrice d&#xE9;coulant de l&#x26;#39;ext&#xE9;rieur de la hi&#xE9;rarchie visuelle corticale qui entra&#xEE;ne l&#x26;#39;aire V1 directement.

Diese Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass taktile Verarbeitung okzipitale Kortex &uuml;ber zwei unterschiedliche Wege betrifft: einer unterdr&uuml;ckende oben nach unten absteigend durch die visuelle kortikale Hierarchie und einem erregenden Weg aus au&szlig;erhalb der visuellen kortikalen Hierarchie, der Bereich V1 direkt antreibt.

La participaci&#xF3;n de la corteza occipital en el procesamiento sensorial no se limita &#xFA;nicamente a la modalidad visual. Procesamiento t&#xE1;ctil se ha demostrado que modulan de orden superior las zonas de integraci&#xF3;n visual y multisensorial en avistados los sujetos, as&#xED; como visualmente privados, sin embargo, el grado de participaci&#xF3;n de las primeras &#xE1;reas corticales visuales no est&#xE1; clara. Para investigar esta cuesti&#xF3;n, se emplearon im&#xE1;genes de resonancia magn&#xE9;tica en la visi&#xF3;n normal, en pocas palabras con los ojos vendados sujetos con bordes bien definidos, ya que por medio del tacto visuotopic explorado y evaluado los patrones de puntos en relieve. Estos resultados sugieren que el procesamiento t&#xE1;ctil afecta corteza occipital a trav&#xE9;s de dos v&#xED;as distintas: un supresor de arriba hacia abajo v&#xED;a descendente a trav&#xE9;s de la jerarqu&#xED;a visual cortical y una v&#xED;a de excitaci&#xF3;n resultante de fuera de la jerarqu&#xED;a visual cortical que conduce directamente &#xE1;rea V1.

Human parietal cortex is implicated in a wide variety of sensory and cognitive functions, yet its precise organization remains unclear. Visual field maps provide a potential structural basis for descriptions of functional organization. Here, we detail the topography of a series of five maps of the contralateral visual hemifield within human posterior parietal cortex. These maps are located along the medial bank of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and are revealed by direct visual stimulation during functional magnetic resonance imaging, allowing these parietal regions to be routinely and reliably identified simultaneously with occipital visual areas. Two of these maps (IPS3 and IPS4) are novel, whereas two others (IPS1 and IPS2) have previously been revealed only by higher-order cognitive tasks. Area V7, a previously identified visual map, is observed to lie within posterior IPS and to share a foveal representation with IPS1. These parietal maps are reliably observed across scan sessions; however, their precise topography varies between individuals. The multimodal organization of posterior IPS mirrors this variability in visual topography, with complementary tactile activations found immediately adjacent to the visual maps both medially and laterally. These visual maps may provide a practical framework in which to characterize the functional organization of human IPS.

A variety of mechanisms have been proposed to explain illusory contour formation. However, since prior studies have focused on a single mechanism, there is no clear consensus regarding contour formation mechanisms. Here we developed a novel vivid dynamic display we call the chomping pacman that allows measurement of minute differences in contour clarity. This illusion is shown to be more vivid than traditional static displays. Using the method of adjustment, we are able to identify three mechanisms of contour formation: extrapolation, interpolation, and figural. We posit that these three mechanisms combine to form the general illusory contour percept in traditional static Kanizsa displays and likely contribute to real-world contour perception.

A long-standing debate in cognitive neuroscience pertains to the innate nature of language development and the underlying factors that determine this faculty. We explored the neural correlates associated with language processing in a unique individual who is early blind, congenitally deaf, and possesses a high level of language function. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we compared the neural networks associated with the tactile reading of words presented in Braille, Print on Palm (POP), and a haptic form of American Sign Language (haptic ASL or hASL). With all three modes of tactile communication, indentifying words was associated with robust activation within occipital cortical regions as well as posterior superior temporal and inferior frontal language areas (lateralized within the left hemisphere). In a normally sighted and hearing interpreter, identifying words through hASL was associated with left-lateralized activation of inferior frontal language areas however robust occipital cortex activation was not observed. Diffusion tensor imaging -based tractography revealed differences consistent with enhanced occipital-temporal connectivity in the deaf-blind subject. Our results demonstrate that in the case of early onset of both visual and auditory deprivation, tactile-based communication is associated with an extensive cortical network implicating occipital as well as posterior superior temporal and frontal associated language areas. The cortical areas activated in this deaf-blind subject are consistent with characteristic cortical regions previously implicated with language. Un debate de larga data en la neurociencia cognitiva se refiere a la naturaleza innata del desarrollo del lenguaje y de los factores subyacentes que determinan esta facultad. Hemos explorado los correlatos neuronales asociados con el procesamiento del lenguaje en un individuo &#xFA;nico que es temprano ciego, sordera cong&#xE9;nita, y posee un alto nivel de la funci&#xF3;n del lenguaje. Utilizando im&#xE1;genes de resonancia magn&#xE9;tica funcional (fMRI), se compararon las redes neuronales asociadas con la lectura t&#xE1;ctil de las palabras que se presentan en el sistema Braille, impresi&#xF3;n de Ramos (POP), y una forma t&#xE1;ctil de Lenguaje de Se&#xF1;as Americano (ASL o h&#xE1;ptica HASL). Con los tres modos de comunicaci&#xF3;n t&#xE1;ctil, identificando las palabras se asoci&#xF3; con la activaci&#xF3;n occipital s&#xF3;lido en las regiones corticales posteriores, as&#xED; como las &#xE1;reas superiores frontales temporales e inferiores idioma (lateralizado en el hemisferio izquierdo). En un int&#xE9;rprete de visi&#xF3;n normal y el o&#xED;do, la identificaci&#xF3;n de palabras a trav&#xE9;s de HASL se asoci&#xF3; con la izquierda-lateralizado la activaci&#xF3;n de las &#xE1;reas del lenguaje inferiores frontales sin embargo, la activaci&#xF3;n de la corteza occipital, robusta, no se observ&#xF3;. Difusi&#xF3;n de im&#xE1;genes de tensor de base tractograf&#xED;a revel&#xF3; diferencias consistentes con una mayor occipito-temporal de la conectividad en el tema sordo-ciegos. Nuestros resultados demuestran que en el caso de la aparici&#xF3;n temprana de la privaci&#xF3;n visual y auditiva, t&#xE1;ctil basada en la comunicaci&#xF3;n se asocia con una extensa red cortical que implican occipital, as&#xED; como la posterior superior temporal y frontal asociados &#xE1;reas del lenguaje. Las &#xE1;reas corticales activadas en este tema sordo-ciegos son consistentes con caracter&#xED;sticas previamente implicadas regiones corticales con el lenguaje. Por &#xFA;ltimo, la capacidad de recuperaci&#xF3;n de la funci&#xF3;n del lenguaje en el contexto de la privaci&#xF3;n visual y auditiva temprana y combinado puede estar relacionado con una mejor conectividad entre las &#xE1;reas corticales correspondientes.

Intrinsic activity in the brain is organized into networks. Although constrained by their anatomical connections, functional correlations between nodes of these networks reorganize dynamically. Dynamic organization implies that couplings between network nodes can be reconfigured to support processing demands. To explore such reconfigurations, we combined repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) to modulate cortical activity in one node of the default network, and assessed the effect of this upon functional correlations throughout the network. Two different frequencies of rTMS to the same default network node (the left posterior inferior parietal lobule, lpIPL) induced two topographically distinct changes in functional connectivity. High-frequency rTMS to lpIPL decreased functional correlations between cortical default network nodes, but not between these nodes and the hippocampal formation. In contrast, low frequency rTMS to lpIPL did not alter connectivity between cortical default network nodes, but increased functional correlations between lpIPL and the hippocampal formation. These results suggest that the default network is composed of (at least) two subsystems. More broadly, the finding that two rTMS stimulation regimens to the same default network node have distinct effects reveals that this node is embedded within a network that possesses multiple, functionally distinct relationships among its distributed partners.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation modulates the brain's intrinsic activity in a frequency-dependent manner.

L&#x26;#39;activit&#xE9; intrins&#xE8;que dans le cerveau est organis&#xE9; en r&#xE9;seaux. Intrinsische Aktivit&auml;t im Gehirn ist in Netzwerken organisiert. Obwohl durch ihre anatomischen Verbindungen eingeschr&auml;nkt, reorganisieren dynamisch funktionelle Zusammenh&auml;nge zwischen Knoten dieser Netzwerke. Zwei verschiedene Frequenzen der rTMS an den gleichen Standard Network Node (linke posterior inferior parietal empfinden, LpIPL) induziert zwei topografisch deutliche &Auml;nderungen in funktionelle Konnektivit&auml;t. Hochfrequenz-rTMS zu LpIPL verringerte sich um funktionelle Zusammenh&auml;nge zwischen kortikalen Standardknoten Netzwerk, aber nicht zwischen diesen Knoten und der hippocampal-Formation. Im Gegensatz dazu Niederfrequenz rTMS zu LpIPL nicht Konnektivit&auml;t zwischen kortikalen Standard Netzwerkknoten nichts &auml;ndern funktionelle Zusammenh&auml;nge zwischen LpIPL und der hippocampal Bildung erh&ouml;ht. Diese Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass das Standardnetzwerk aus (mindestens) zwei Subsystemen besteht. Im weiteren Sinne die Feststellung, dass zwei rTMS Stimulierung Therapien an den gleichen Standard Network Node unterschiedliche Wirkungen haben offenbart, dass dieser Knoten in einem Netzwerk eingebettet ist, die mehrere, besitzt funktional unterschiedliche Beziehungen zwischen den verteilten Partnern.

Attivit&agrave; intrinseca nel cervello &egrave; organizzato in reti. Due diverse frequenze di rTMS allo stesso nodo di rete predefinito (il lobulo parietale inferiore posteriore sinistro, lpIPL) indotta da due cambiamenti topograficamente distinte in connettivit&agrave; funzionale. RTMS ad alta frequenza per lpIPL diminuito le correlazioni funzionali tra nodi di rete predefinita corticale, ma non tra questi nodi e la formazione dell&#39;ippocampo. Al contrario, rTMS a bassa frequenza a lpIPL non alterava connettivit&agrave; tra nodi di rete predefinita corticale, ma aumentato le correlazioni funzionali tra lpIPL e la formazione dell&#39;ippocampo. Questi risultati suggeriscono che la rete predefinita &egrave; composta da (almeno) due sottosistemi. Pi&ugrave; in generale, la constatazione che la due rTMS regimi di stimolazione allo stesso nodo di rete predefinita hanno effetti distinti rivela che questo nodo &egrave; incorporato all&#39;interno di una rete che possiede pi&ugrave;, funzionalmente distinte relazioni tra i suoi partner distribuita.

Actividad intr&#xED;nseca en el cerebro est&#xE1; organizado en redes. Aunque limitado por sus conexiones anat&#xF3;micas, las correlaciones funcionales entre los nodos de estas redes reorganizar de forma din&#xE1;mica. Organizaci&#xF3;n din&#xE1;mica implica que los acoplamientos entre los nodos de la red puede ser reconfigurado para apoyar las demandas de procesamiento. Para explorar estas reconfiguraciones, se combinaron estimulaci&#xF3;n magn&#xE9;tica transcraneal repetitiva (rTMS) y la resonancia magn&#xE9;tica funcional de conectividad (fcMRI) para modular la actividad cortical en un nodo de la red por defecto, y se evalu&#xF3; el efecto de esto sobre las correlaciones funcionales a lo largo de la red. Dos frecuencias diferentes de EMTr en el nodo predeterminado misma red (a la izquierda l&#xF3;bulo parietal posterior inferior, lpIPL) inducida por dos cambios diferentes topogr&#xE1;ficamente en la conectividad funcional. EMTr de alta frecuencia a la disminuci&#xF3;n de lpIPL correlaciones funcionales entre las corticales nodos de red por defecto, pero no entre estos nodos y la formaci&#xF3;n del hipocampo. Por el contrario, la EMTr de baja frecuencia a lpIPL no alter&#xF3; la conectividad entre los nodos de red por defecto cortical, pero aument&#xF3; las correlaciones funcionales entre lpIPL y la formaci&#xF3;n del hipocampo. Estos resultados sugieren que la red por defecto se compone de (al menos) dos subsistemas. En t&#xE9;rminos m&#xE1;s generales, la constataci&#xF3;n de que los reg&#xED;menes de dos rTMS de estimulaci&#xF3;n a la misma red de nodo predeterminado tener efectos diferentes revela que este nodo se inserta dentro de una red que cuenta con relaciones m&#xFA;ltiples, funcionalmente diferentes distribuidos entre sus socios.
