Looking foward to the future where the device becomes flexible and rollable, indium tin oxide (ITO) fabricated on the plastic substrate becomes indispensable. Metallization on the ITO plastic substrate is an essential and required process. Electroplating is a cost-effective and high-throughput metallization process; however, the poor surface coverage and interfacial adhesion between electroplated metal and ITO plastic substrate limits its applications. This paper develops a new method to directly electroplate metals having strong adhesion and uniform deposition on an ITO plastic substrate by using a combination of 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane (MPS) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and a sweeping potential technique. An impedance capacitive analysis supports the proposed bridging link model for MPS SAMs at the interface between the ITO and the electrolyte. 

Direct electroplated metallization on indium tin oxide plastic substrate.

The highly conductive and flexible nickel-polyethylene terephthalate (Ni-PET) substrate was prepared by a facile way including electrodeposition and hot-press transferring. The effectiveness was demonstrated in the counter electrode of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The Ni film electrodeposition mechanism, microstructure, and DSSC performance for the Ni-PET flexible substrate were investigated. The uniform and continuous Ni film was first fabricated by electroplating metallic Ni on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) and then intactly transferred onto PET via hot-pressing using Surlyn as the joint adhesive. The obtained flexible Ni-PET substrate shows low sheet resistance of 0.18Ω/□ and good chemical stability for the I(-)/I(3-) electrolyte. A high light-to-electric energy conversion efficiency of 7.89% was demonstrated in DSSCs system based on this flexible electrode substrate due to its high conductivity, which presents an improvement of 10.4% as compared with the general ITO-PEN flexible substrate. This method paves a facile and cost-effective way to manufacture various metals on a plastic nonconducive substrate beneficial for the devices toward flexible and rollable. 

Highly conductive and low cost Ni-PET flexible substrate for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells.

In this paper, high electrocatalytic and wettable nitrogen-doped microwave-exfoliated graphene (N-MEG) nanosheets are used as Pt-free counter electrode (CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). A low cost solution-based process is developed by using cyanamide (NH2 CN) at room temperature and normal pressure. The pyrrolic and pyridinic N atoms are doped into the carbon conjugated lattice to enhance electrocatalytic activity. N-MEG film having N-doping active sites and large porosity provides a wettable surface to facilitate electrolyte diffusion so that improves fill factor. Moreover, the control of the air exposure time after completing N-MEG film is found to be crucial to obtain a reliable N-MEG CE. A high DSSC efficiency up to 7.18% can be achieved based on N-MEG CE, which is nearly comparable to conventional Pt CE. 

High electrocatalytic and wettable nitrogen-doped microwave-exfoliated graphene nanosheets as counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells.

By virtue of its amorphous structure with a short-range order feature, the inorganic nanoporous nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) can reversibly and rapidly switch wettability by alternate treatments of environmental chamber (superhydrophobic) and UV/ozone (superhydrophilic). The switchable mechanism of the NiOOH/Ni(OH)2 pair arising from its exceptional intrinsic short-range order-disorder transition together with chemical composition change is highlighted for the first time, which significantly differs from the current stimuli-responsive materials. This distinct multifunctional thin film not only possesses reversible wettability but also is optically patternable/repairable and electrically conductive, which could be applicable in the manufacturing of various micro- and nanostructures. We demonstrate this potential in the rewritable two-dimensional (2D) microfluidic channels and wetting-contrast enhanced selective electroplating. 

A short-range ordered-disordered transition of a NiOOH/Ni(OH)2 pair induces switchable wettability.

A new type of embedded metal-mesh transparent electrode (EMTE) with in-situ electrodeposited catalytic platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) is developed as a high-performance counter electrode (CE) for lightweight flexible bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The thick but narrow nickel micromesh fully embedded in a plastic film provides superior electrical conductivity, optical transmittance, and mechanical stability to the novel electrode. PtNPs decorated selectively on the nickel micromesh surface provide catalytic function with minimum material cost and without interfering with optical transparency. Facile and fully solution-processed fabrication of the novel CE is demonstrated with potential for scalable and cost-effective production. Using this PtNP-decorated nickel EMTE as the CE and titanium foil as the photoanode, unifacial flexible DSSCs are fabricated with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.91%. By replacing the titanium foil with a transparent ITO-PEN photoanode, full-plastic bifacial DSSCs are fabricated and tested, demonstrating a remarkable PCE of 4.87% under rear-side illumination, which approaches 85% of the 5.67% PCE under front-side illumination, among the highest ratio in published results. These promising results reveal the enormous potential of this hybrid transparent CE in scalable production and commercialization of low-cost and efficient flexible DSSCs.

Solution-Processed Transparent Nickel-Mesh Counter Electrode with in-Situ Electrodeposited Platinum Nanoparticles for Full-Plastic Bifacial Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

In this paper we provide insight into an anomalous corrosion process, referred to as electroablation (EA), which converts multilayer flakes of transition metal diselenides like MoSe into their corresponding monolayers when micromechanically exfoliated on a conductive electrode and subsequently subjected to a high anodic potential inside a conventional electrochemical cell. Photoluminescence intensity maps and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images confirmed the single crystalline nature and 2H-hexagonal lattice structure of the remnant monolayer MoSe flakes, indicating the superior corrosion stability of the monolayers compared to that of the bulk counterpart. It is noted that the EA technique is a low-cost alternative for high-yield synthesis of single crystalline monolayer MoSe at room temperature. We also found that the dynamics of such an electro-oxidation-mediated and self-limiting corrosion process differs significantly for MoSe and WSe. While we were able to engineer the corrosion conditions for the EA process to obtain monolayers of MoSe, our attempts to obtain monolayers of WSe were largely unsuccessful. Finally, we constructed a phenomenological physical chemistry framework to explain such anomalous corrosion processes in transition metal diselenides.

Anomalous Corrosion of Bulk Transition Metal Diselenides Leading to Stable Monolayers.

In this paper, we report high-performance monolayer thin-film transistors (TFTs) based on a variety of two-dimensional layered semiconductors such as MoS, WS, and MoSe which were obtained from their corresponding bulk counterparts via an anomalous but high-yield and low-cost electrochemical corrosion process, also referred to as electro-ablation (EA), at room temperature. These monolayer TFTs demonstrated current ON-OFF ratios in excess of 10 along with ON currents of 120 μA/μm for MoS, 40 μA/μm for WS, and 40 μA/μm for MoSe which clearly outperform the existing TFT technologies. We found that these monolayers have larger Schottky barriers for electron injection compared to their multilayer counterparts, which is partially compensated by their superior electrostatics and ultra-thin tunnel barriers. We observed an Anderson type semiconductor-to-metal transition in these monolayers and also discussed possible scattering mechanisms that manifest in the temperature dependence of the electron mobility. Finally, our study suggests superior chemical stability and electronic integrity of monolayers even after being exposed to extreme electro-oxidation and corrosion processes which is promising for the implementation of such TFTs in harsh environment sensing. Overall, the EA process proves to be a facile synthesis route offering higher monolayer yields than mechanical exfoliation and lower cost and complexity than chemical vapor deposition methods.

Facile Electrochemical Synthesis of 2D Monolayers for High-Performance Thin-Film Transistors.

Inverted perovskite solar cells incorporating RF sputtered NiO thin films as a hole transport layer and window layer are demonstrated. The electrical and optical properties of the NiO thin films are engineered using varied sputtering conditions. The localized states within bandgap owing to its crystal disorder and nonstoichiometric features affect the transmittance and the optical bandgap of the NiO thin films which in turn influences the J of the perovskite solar cells. In addition, the electrical properties of the NiO thin films can be also varied during sputtering condition affecting the concentration of nickel vacancies and the resulting hole concentration. The conductivity largely originates from the hole concentration relating to the density of states in the NiO thin films which influence the fill factor (FF) of the solar cells. The solar cells fabricated with the NiO thin films made at 4 Pa of deposition pressure show highest performance owing to excellent transmittance and wider bandgap along with moderate conductivity. With further optimization, the perovskite solar cells exhibit ~20 mA/cm of J and a 12.4% PCE (11.3% of averaged PCE).

Engineered optical and electrical performance of rf-sputtered undoped nickel oxide thin films for inverted perovskite solar cells.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive motor neuron disease caused by deleterious variants in SMN1 that lead to a marked decrease in survival motor neuron (SMN) protein expression. Humans have a second SMN gene (SMN2) that is almost identical to SMN1. However, due to alternative splicing the majority of SMN2 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) is translated into a truncated, unstable protein that is quickly degraded. Because the presence of SMN2 provides a unique opportunity for therapy development in SMA patients, the mechanisms that regulate SMN2 splicing and mRNA expression have been elucidated in great detail. In contrast, how much SMN protein is produced at different developmental time points and in different tissues remains under-characterized. In this study, we addressed this issue by determining SMN protein expression levels at three developmental time points across six different mouse tissues and in two distinct mouse models of SMA ('severe' Taiwanese and 'intermediate' Smn2B/- mice). We found that, in healthy control mice, SMN protein expression was significantly influenced by both age and tissue type. When comparing mouse models of SMA, we found that, despite being transcribed from genetically different alleles, control SMN levels were relatively similar. In contrast, the degree of SMN depletion between tissues in SMA varied substantially over time and between the two models. These findings offer an explanation for the differential vulnerability of tissues and organs observed in SMA and further our understanding of the systemic and temporal requirements for SMN with direct relevance for developing effective therapies for SMA.

Temporal and tissue-specific variability of SMN protein levels in mouse models of spinal muscular atrophy.

Ever since loss of survival motor neuron (SMN) protein was identified as the direct cause of the childhood inherited neurodegenerative disorder spinal muscular atrophy, significant efforts have been made to reveal the molecular functions of this ubiquitously expressed protein. Resulting research demonstrated that SMN plays important roles in multiple fundamental cellular homeostatic pathways, including a well-characterised role in the assembly of the spliceosome and biogenesis of ribonucleoproteins. More recent studies have shown that SMN is also involved in other housekeeping processes, including mRNA trafficking and local translation, cytoskeletal dynamics, endocytosis and autophagy. Moreover, SMN has been shown to influence mitochondria and bioenergetic pathways as well as regulate function of the ubiquitin-proteasome system. In this review, we summarise these diverse functions of SMN, confirming its key role in maintenance of the homeostatic environment of the cell.

The role of survival motor neuron protein (SMN) in protein homeostasis.

Pax6 is a key regulator of the rates of progenitor cell division in cerebral corticogenesis. Previous work has suggested that this action is mediated at least in part by regulation of the cell cycle gene , which acts largely on the transition from G1 to S phase. We began the present study by investigating whether, in addition to , other Pax6-regulated cell cycle genes are likely to be primary mediators of Pax6's actions on cortical progenitor cell cycles. Following acute cortex-specific deletion of Pax6,  showed changes in expression a day earlier than any other Pax6-regulated cell cycle gene suggesting that it is the primary mediator of Pax6's actions. We then used flow cytometry to show that progenitors lacking Pax6 have a shortened G1 phase and that their Cdk6 levels are increased in all phases. We found that Cdk6 levels oscillate during the cell cycle, increasing from G1 to M phase. We propose a model in which loss of Pax6 shortens G1 phase by raising overall Cdk6 levels, thereby shortening the time taken for Cdk6 levels to cross a threshold triggering transition to S phase.

Pax6 Lengthens G1 Phase and Decreases Oscillating Cdk6 Levels in Murine Embryonic Cortical Progenitors.

The photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells is highly dependent on the control of morphology and crystallization of perovskite film, which usually requires a controlled atmosphere. Therefore, fully ambient fabrication is a desired technology for the development of perovskite solar cells toward real production. Here, an air-knife assisted recrystallization method is reported, based on a simple bath-immersion to prepare high-quality perovskite absorbers. The resulted film shows a strong crystallinity with pure domains and low trap-state density, which contribute to the device performance and stability. The proposed method can operate in a wide process window, such as variable relative humidity and bath-immersion conditions, demonstrating a power conversion efficiency over 19% and 27% under 1 sun and 500-2000 lux dim-light illumination respectively, which is among the highest performance of ambient-process perovskite solar cells.

An Air Knife-Assisted Recrystallization Method for Ambient-Process Planar Perovskite Solar Cells and Its Dim-Light Harvesting.

Efficient low-grade heat recovery can help to reduce greenhouse gas emission as over 70% of primary energy input is wasted as heat, but current technologies to fulfill the heat-to-electricity conversion are still far from optimum. Here we report a direct thermal charging cell, using asymmetric electrodes of a graphene oxide/platinum nanoparticles cathode and a polyaniline anode in Fe/Fe redox electrolyte via isothermal heating operation. When heated, the cell generates voltage via a temperature-induced pseudocapacitive effect of graphene oxide and a thermogalvanic effect of Fe/Fe, and then discharges continuously by oxidizing polyaniline and reducing Fe under isothermal heating till Fe depletion. The cell can be self-regenerated when cooled down. Direct thermal charging cells attain a temperature coefficient of 5.0 mV K and heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 2.8% at 70 °C (21.4% of Carnot efficiency) and 3.52% at 90 °C (19.7% of Carnot efficiency), outperforming other thermoelectrochemical and thermoelectric systems.
