The three-dimensional vestibulo-ocular reflex (3D VOR) ideally generates compensatory ocular rotations not only with a magnitude equal and opposite to the head rotation but also about an axis that is collinear with the head rotation axis. Vestibulo-ocular responses only partially fulfill this ideal behavior. Because animal studies have shown that vestibular stimulation about particular axes may lead to suboptimal compensatory responses, we investigated in healthy subjects the peaks and troughs in 3D VOR stabilization in terms of gain and alignment of the 3D vestibulo-ocular response. Six healthy upright sitting subjects underwent whole body small amplitude sinusoidal and constant acceleration transients delivered by a six-degree-of-freedom motion platform. Subjects were oscillated about the vertical axis and about axes in the horizontal plane varying between roll and pitch at increments of 22.5 degrees in azimuth. Transients were delivered in yaw, roll, and pitch and in the vertical canal planes. Eye movements were recorded in with 3D search coils. Eye coil signals were converted to rotation vectors, from which we calculated gain and misalignment. During horizontal axis stimulation, systematic deviations were found. In the light, misalignment of the 3D VOR had a maximum misalignment at about 45 degrees . These deviations in misalignment can be explained by vector summation of the eye rotation components with a low gain for torsion and high gain for vertical. In the dark and in response to transients, gain of all components had lower values. Misalignment in darkness and for transients had different peaks and troughs than in the light: its minimum was during pitch axis stimulation and its maximum during roll axis stimulation. We show that the relatively large misalignment for roll in darkness is due to a horizontal eye movement component that is only present in darkness. In combination with the relatively low torsion gain, this horizontal component has a relative large effect on the alignment of the eye rotation axis with respect to the head rotation axis.

R&eacute;flexe vestibulo-oculaire en trois dimensions (3D VOR) id&eacute;alement g&eacute;n&egrave;re des rotations oculaires compensatoires non seulement d&#39;une ampleur &eacute;gale et oppos&eacute;e &agrave; la rotation de la t&ecirc;te, mais aussi autour d&#39;un axe qui est colin&eacute;aire &agrave; l&#39;axe de rotation de la t&ecirc;te. Vestibulo-oculaire r&eacute;ponses ne r&eacute;pondent que partiellement &agrave; ce comportement id&eacute;al. Transitoires ont &eacute;t&eacute; livr&eacute;s en lacet, roulis et tangage et dans les plans vertical canal. Mouvements oculaires ont &eacute;t&eacute; enregistr&eacute;s avec des bobines de recherche 3D. Oeil bobine signaux ont &eacute;t&eacute; convertis &agrave; des vecteurs de rotation, d&#39;o&ugrave; nous avons calcul&eacute; le gain et le d&eacute;salignement. Un mauvais alignement dans l&#39;obscurit&eacute; et pour les transitoires avait diff&eacute;rents pics et les creux que dans la lumi&egrave;re : son minimum a &eacute;t&eacute; au cours de la stimulation d&#39;axe de tangage et son maximum durant la stimulation axe de roulis. Nous montrons que le d&eacute;salignement relativement important pour rouleau dans l&#39;obscurit&eacute; est due &agrave; une composante de mouvement oculaire horizontale qui n&#39;est pr&eacute;sente que dans l&#39;obscurit&eacute;. En combinaison avec le gain de torsion relativement faible, cette composante horizontale a un grand effet relatif sur l&#39;alignement de l&#39;axe de rotation des yeux par rapport &agrave; l&#39;axe de rotation de la t&ecirc;te.

Pics et les creux de tridimensionnel r&eacute;flexe vestibulo-oculaire chez les humains.

Il riflesso vestibulo-oculare tridimensionale (3D VOR) idealmente genera compensative rotazioni oculari non solo con una magnitudo uguale ed opposta la rotazione della testa, ma anche attorno ad un asse che &egrave; allineato con l&#39;asse di rotazione della testa. Vestibulo-oculare risposte solo parzialmente adempiere questo comportamento ideale. Perch&eacute; gli studi su animali hanno dimostrato che la stimolazione vestibolare su assi particolare pu&ograve; portare a risposte compensative non ottimali, abbiamo studiato in soggetti sani la picchi e depressioni nella stabilizzazione VOR 3D in termini di guadagno e l&#39;allineamento della risposta 3D vestibulo-oculare. Sei soggetti sani seduta dritta ha subito piccole sinusoidale di ampiezza tutto il corpo e transitori di accelerazione costante consegnati da una piattaforma di sei gradi di libert&agrave; di movimento. Soggetti erano ha oscillati attorno all&#39;asse verticale e su assi nel piano orizzontale variabile fra rollio e beccheggio a incrementi di 22,5 gradi in Azimut. Transitori sono stati consegnati in imbardata, rotolo e pece e nei piani verticali di canale. Movimenti oculari sono stati registrati con bobine di ricerca 3D. Dimostriamo che il disallineamento relativamente grande per rotolo nel buio &egrave; dovuto ad un componente del movimento di occhio orizzontale che &egrave; presente solo nelle tenebre. In combinazione con il guadagno relativamente bassa torsione, questa componente orizzontale ha un grosso effetto relativo sull&#39;allineamento dell&#39;asse di rotazione dell&#39;occhio rispetto all&#39;asse di rotazione della testa.

We investigated under what conditions humans can make independent slow phase eye movements. The ability to make independent movements of the two eyes generally is attributed to few specialized lateral eyed animal species, for example chameleons. In our study, we showed that humans also can move the eyes in different directions. To maintain binocular retinal correspondence independent slow phase movements of each eye are produced.
