Een essentieel instrument voor het onderzoek naar de rol van een gen tijdens de ontwikkeling is de mogelijkheid om gen knockdown, overexpressie en misexpression studies uit te voeren. In zebravis (<em&gt; Danio rerio</em&gt;), Micro-injectie van RNA, DNA, eiwitten, antisense oligonucleotiden en andere kleine moleculen in de zich ontwikkelende embryo biedt onderzoekers een snelle en robuuste test voor het verkennen van genfunctie<em&gt; In vivo</em&gt;.
