Göbek kordonu, mezenkimal stromal hücreler (mezenkimal kök hücreler olarak da adlandırılır, MKH) ve endotel progenitör hücrelerin koloni oluşturan (ECFCs) de dahil olmak üzere yüksek proliferatif potansiyele sahip progenitör hücreler için zengin bir kaynaktır. Her iki hücre tipleri, doku bütünlüğünün korunmasında anahtar oyuncular ve muhtemelen de rejeneratif süreçleri ve tümör oluşumu ilgilidirler.
