Behavioral endocrinologische onderzoek bij mensen als bij dieren suggereert dat testosteron een belangrijke rol speelt in sociale interacties. Studies met knaagdieren hebben aangetoond een direct verband tussen testosteron en agressief gedrag en een volkswijsheid past deze bevindingen voor de mens, wat suggereert dat testosteron veroorzaakt asociaal, egoïstisch of zelfs agressief gedrag 2. In een dubbelblind en placebo-gecontroleerd experiment, hebben we die een eenmalige sublinguale dosis van 0,5 mg testosteron (met een hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrine vervoerder) naar 121 vrouwen en onderzocht hun sociale interactie gedrag in een economische onderhandelingen paradigma. Real monetaire stimuleringsmaatregelen op het spel staan ​​in dit paradigma; elke speler A krijgt een bepaalde hoeveelheid geld en heeft om een ​​aanbod te doen aan een andere speler B over hoe het geld te delen. Als B accepteert, krijgt ze wat was aangeboden en speler A houdt de rest. Als B weigert het aanbod, niemand krijgt iets. Een status die speler A wordt verwacht om te voorkomen dat afgewezen door gedragen op een prosociale manier, dat wil zeggen door het maken van een hogere biedt. De resultaten tonen aan dat, als de verwachtingen over het hormoon worden gecontroleerd voor, testosteron toediening leidt tot een significante toename van de reële onderhandelingen biedt in vergelijking met placebo. De rol van verwachtingen wordt weerspiegeld in het feit dat de proefpersonen die melden dat ze geloven te hebben ontvangen testosteron lagere offertes te maken dan degenen die zeggen dat ze geloven dat ze werden behandeld met een placebo.
