Human sepsis wordt gekenmerkt door een reeks van systemische reacties in reactie op een intensieve en massale infectie die niet ter plaatse te worden opgenomen door de gastheer. Op dit moment, sepsis behoort tot de top tien oorzaken van sterfte in de Verenigde Staten intensive care units 1. Tijdens sepsis zijn er twee gevestigde hemodynamische fasen die kunnen elkaar overlappen. De tweede fase (hypodynamic) is een anti-inflammatoire proces waarbij veranderde monocyten antigen presentatie, verminderde lymfocyten proliferatie en de functie en verhoogde apoptose.
