Myggor överföra ett antal olika virus, inklusive viktiga mänskliga patogener som West Nile virus, denguefeber virus och chickungunya virus. Många av dessa virus har intensifierats i endemiska områden och utvidgas till nya områden, vilket kräver effektiv övervakning och kontroll program för att möta dessa hot. Cellkulturer övervakas för cytopatisk effekt från dagar 3-7 efter ympning och eventuella virus odlas i cellkulturer identifieras genom lämpliga diagnostiska tester. Genom att använda denna metod, har vi isolerat 9 olika virus från myggor samlats in i Connecticut, USA, och bland dessa finns 5 kända för att orsaka sjukdomar hos människan. Tre av dessa virus (West Nile-virus, Potosi virus, och La Crosse-virus) är nya rekord för Nordamerika eller New England sedan 1999. Förmågan att upptäcka en mångfald av virus är avgörande för att övervaka både etablerade och nytillkomna virus i mygga befolkningen.
