Ondanks de beschermende rol die de bloed-hersen barrière speelt in het afschermen van de hersenen, het beperkt de toegang tot het centrale zenuwstelsel (CZS), die meestal resulteert in het uitvallen van potentiële therapeutische middelen ontworpen voor neurodegeneratieve aandoeningen 1,2. Neurodegeneratieve ziekten zoals de spinale musculaire atrofie (SMA), waarin de lagere motorische neuronen worden aangetast, kunnen veel voordeel halen uit de invoering van het therapeutische middelen in het centraal zenuwstelsel.
