Ons begrip van de moleculaire en cellulaire gebeurtenissen die regeneratie te voorkomen op DREZ is onvolledig, deels omdat complexe veranderingen die gepaard gaan met een zenuwbeschadiging zijn afgeleid uit post-mortem analyses. Dynamische cellulaire processen, zoals regeneratie van axonen, worden het best bestudeerd met technieken die real-time gebeurtenissen met meerdere waarnemingen van ieder levend dier te vangen. Ons vermogen om neuronen te controleren serieel in vivo is dramatisch toe als gevolg van revolutionaire innovaties in de optica en de muis genetische manipulatie. Verscheidene lijnen van thy1-GFP transgene muizen, waarin de subsets van neuronen genetisch zijn geëtiketteerd in verschillende fluorescerende kleuren, maken individuele neuronen af te beelden in vivo 1.
