RNA-moleculen spelen een essentiële rol in de biologie. Naast het overbrengen van genetische informatie, kan RNA vouwen in unieke tertiaire structuren vervullen van een specifieke biologische rol als regelgever, bindmiddel of katalysator. Informatie over de tertiaire formatie contact is essentieel voor de functie van RNA-moleculen te begrijpen. Hydroxyl-radicalen (• OH) zijn uniek probes van de structuur van nucleïnezuren vanwege hun hoge reactiviteit en de geringe afmetingen. 1 Bij gebruik als een footprinting probe, hydroxyl-radicalen kaart het oplosmiddel bereikbare buitenzijde van het fosfodiester ruggengraat van DNA en RNA een 2 met zo fijn als single nucleotide resolutie.
