Cutane leishmaniasis is endemisch in de tropen en Neotropen. cutaneous leishmaniasis in the dorsal skin of hamsters: a useful model for the screening of antileishmanial drugs

Traditioneel worden hamsters experimenteel geïnfecteerd in de snuit of de voetzool. Maar in deze sites niet een zweer altijd optreedt, meting van de laesie grootte is een harde procedure en dieren tonen moeite om te eten, ademen en bewegen vanwege de laesie. Om de hamster model cutane leishmaniasis, jonge volwassen mannelijke en vrouwelijke goudhamsters optimaliseren (Mesocricetus auratus) werden geïnjecteerd aan de dorsale huid met 1 tot 1,5 x l0 7 promastigoten van Leishmania soorten en progressie latere lesies werden geëvalueerd tot 16 weken na infectie. De gouden hamster is gekozen omdat het wordt beschouwd als een adequate bio-model om geneesmiddelen te evalueren tegen Leishmania zoals ze zijn gevoelig voor infectie door verschillende soorten. Cutane infectie van hamsters resulteert in een chronische, maar gecontroleerde laesies, en een klinische evolutie met borden vergelijkbaar met die waargenomen bij de mens. Daarom is de oprichting of de mate van infectie door het meten van de laesie volgens het gebied van verharding en zweren mogelijk is. Deze aanpak heeft zijn veelzijdigheid en eenvoudig beheer bewezen tijdens de inoculatie, follow-up en karakterisering van typische laesies (ulcera), toepassing van behandelingen door middel van verschillende manieren en het verkrijgen van klinische monsters na verschillende behandelingen. Door het gebruik van deze methode de kwaliteit van het dierlijk leven ten aanzien van bewegen, op zoek naar voedsel en water, spel en sociale activiteiten isalso behouden.
