Herpes keratit, herpes simpleks virüsü tip-1 (HSV-1) ile ilişkili en ciddi patolojilerde biridir. Herpes keratit anda gelişmiş ülkelerde hem kornea kaynaklı ve infeksiyona bağlı körlüğün en önde gelen nedenidir. Herpes keratit Tipik tanıtımı, yara izi gibi kalıcı kornea patolojileri yol açan incelme ve opaklık 1, kornea epitel enfeksiyon ve bazen derin korneal stroma ve endotel içerir. Kornea HSV-1 enfeksiyonu geleneksel deneysel modellerin iki tipte incelenir. Kornea epitel hücrelerinin kültürlü monolayers bir Petri kabındaki enfekte olduğu in vitro modelin de basitlik, tekrarlanabilirliği yüksek düzeyde, hızlı deneyler ve göreceli olarak düşük maliyeti sunmaktadır.
