Uitgebreid onderzoek heeft voldoende bewijzen waaruit blijkt dat het vouwen van eiwitten in de cel is een co-translationeel proces 1-5. Echter, de exacte pad dat polypeptideketen volgt tijdens de co-translationele vouwen om de functionele vorm te komen is nog steeds een raadsel. Om dit te begrijpen en de exacte conformatie van het co-translationele vouwen tussenproducten bepalen, is het noodzakelijk dat technieken dat de isolatie van RNC die beginnende ketens van voorafbepaalde afmetingen hun verdere structurele analyse mogelijk maken. SecM (secretie monitor) is een 170 aminozuur E. coli-eiwit dat de expressie van de downstream SecA (secretie rijden) ATPase in de secM-seca operon 6 regelt.
