La muerte celular programada (PCD) se produce en adultos para mantener la homeostasis del tejido normal y durante el desarrollo embrionario para dar forma a los tejidos y órganos 1,2,6,7. Durante el desarrollo, los productos químicos tóxicos o alteraciones genéticas pueden causar un aumento en la PCD o cambiar los patrones resultantes de PCD en anomalías en el desarrollo y defectos de nacimiento 3-5. Para entender la etiología de estos defectos, el estudio de los embriones puede complementarse con ensayos in vitro que utilizan diferenciar madre embrionarias (ES) de células. La apoptosis es una forma bien estudiado de PCD, que implica tanto intrínseca y extrínseca de señalización para activar la cascada de enzimas caspasas. Cambios característicos celulares incluyen formación de ampollas en la membrana, contracción nuclear y la fragmentación del ADN. Otras formas de PCD no implican la activación de caspasas y puede ser el resultado final de la autofagia prolongado.
