Dyrkning af celler i 3D på passende stilladser menes at bedre efterligne in vivo mikromiljø og øge celle-celle interaktioner. Den resulterende 3D cellulære konstruktion kan ofte være mere relevant at studere de molekylære begivenheder og celle-celle interaktioner end lignende forsøg studeret i 2D. At skabe effektiv 3D-kulturer med levedygtighed høj celle i hele stilladset dyrkningsbetingelserne såsom ilt og pH skal nøje kontrolleres som gradienter i analytkoncentration kan findes i hele 3D-konstruktion. PH-reagerende stilladser kan anvendes som værktøjer til at bestemme microenvironmental pH inden en 3D cellulær konstruktion.
