De functie van zoogdieren neuronen-volwassene geboren blijft een actief gebied van onderzoek. Ioniserende straling remt de geboorte van nieuwe neuronen. Met computer-tomografie geleide focale bestraling (CFIR), kunnen driedimensionale anatomische targeting van specifieke neurale populaties nu worden gebruikt om de functionele rol van volwassen neurogenese beoordelen.
