התקדמות בטכניקות תא חי הקרינה מיקרוסקופיה, כמו גם הבנייה של זני נגיפי רקומביננטי המבטאים חלבוני היתוך ניאון אפשרה להדמיה בזמן אמת של תעבורה והתפשטות של זיהום בנגיף alphaherpes של נוירונים. השירות של חלבוני היתוך ניאון רומן קרום ויראלי, קלפה, וcapsids, בשילוב עם הדמיה תא חי שנוצר על מכלולי חלקיקים נגיפיים העוברים תחבורה בתוך האקסונים. כלים דומים כבר מועסקים בהצלחה לניתוחים של תאי תאים פזורים של חלקיקים נגיפיים לכמת את המספר והמגוון של virions מועבר במגע בין תאים. חשוב לציין, בטכניקות של הדמיה תא החי של תחבורה והתפשטות אנטרוגדית לייצר שפע של מידע ובכלל מהירויות חלקיקי תחבורה, הפצות של חלקיקים, וניתוחים זמניים של לוקליזציה חלבון. לצד טכניקות גנטיות נגיפיות הקלסיים, מתודולוגיות אלה סיפקו תובנות קריטיותלשאלות מכניסטית חשובות. במאמר זה נתאר בפירוט את שיטות ההדמיה שפותחו כדי לענות על שאלות בסיסיות של תחבורה וירוס alphaherpes והתפשטות.
