De huidige technologie is nog onvoldoende om de mechanismen van orgaanfunctie en disfunctie helderen als voorwaarde voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe therapeutische strategieën, want het maakt slechts spaarzame informatie over de moleculaire basis van cellulaire respons op weefsels in gezondheid en ziekte. De huidige technologie maakt slechts een ruimtelijk raam van enkele honderden micrometer door verstrooiing en golffront vervormingseffecten op de ruimtelijke resolutie en signaal-ruisverhouding 6, die bijzonder duidelijk in de zeer compacte weefsel van volwassen dieren.
