<html> MicroRNAs (miRNAs) vormen een krachtige laag van genregulatie door het begeleiden van RISC naar sites op mRNA&#39;s richten en bijgevolg door het moduleren van hun translationeel repressie. Veranderingen in miRNA expressie bleken te worden betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van belangrijke complexe ziekten. Voorts recente bevindingen toonden aan dat miRNAs kan worden afgescheiden aan het extracellulaire milieu en in de bloedbaan en andere lichaamsvloeistoffen waar ze kunnen circuleren met een uitstekende stabiliteit. De functie van dergelijke circulerende miRNAs grotendeels ongrijpbaar, maar systematische hoge doorvoer benaderingen zoals miRNA profilering arrays, hebben geleid tot de identificatie van miRNA handtekeningen in verschillende pathologische aandoeningen, waaronder neurodegeneratieve stoornissen en verscheidene soorten kanker.
