Een dubbelstrengs RNA interferentie (dsRNAi) techniek wordt toegepast om down-reguleren van de maïs cinnamoyl co-enzym A-reductase (ZmCCR1) gen tot lagere planten ligninegehalte. Lignine down-regulatie van de celwand wordt gevisualiseerd door microscopische analyses en gekwantificeerd door de Klason methode. Compositionele veranderingen in hemicellulose en cellulose geanalyseerd.
