Fruitvliegen, Drosophila melanogaster, zijn gebruikt als een waardevol model organisme om onderliggende mechanismen van complexe gedragingen, zoals leren en geheugen, sociale interactie, agressie, druggebruik, slaap, sensorische functies, verkering, en paring 1,2 bestuderen. Een gedrag dat is onderzocht door middel van meerdere protocollen is spontane bewegingsactiviteit. Negatieve geotaxis was een van de eerste methoden ontwikkeld voor het meten Drosophila activiteit en dit protocol omvat het meten van het percentage van vliegen die een bepaalde hoogte van de flacon bereiken na vliegen werden geschud om de bodem van de houder 1,3.
